Miners Records - William Balchin and John Crook (General)

by daphne cutts, Friday, July 03, 2009, 21:03 (5695 days ago)

Our family are trying to find the coal mine that was owned/leased by William Balchin and John Crook. It may have been in both names or one name. They mined in the Forest Of Dean from abt 1871 to 1879.I have searched sites until I'm blue in the face and have come up with zero.I ask,is there an easier way to search for the mine or can anyone please give me direction on where to look.Living so far away makes it impossible to visit the area in person to do research. Regards Daphne Cutts,New Zealand.

Hi Daphne,

Last week there was a thread about John Crook and William Balchin and the mine.
Below is a snippet.
You'll have to search the forum.

"I also believe WB and JC were in business together as colliery proprietors but the name of the mine I have yet to unearth. Seemingly JC was ruined by a mine flooding after 1877."

Regards
Julie

Thank you for your comment Julie. Daphne Cutts and I have been trying to tie down the time of the mine flooding and the best we can do by searching birth certificate records is to note that John Crook was recorded as a Colliery Proprietor at the birth of a son on 09.09.1878 (registered 18.11.1878) but by 13.04.1880 (registered 12.07.1880) when another son was born he was a general storekeeper in Cinderford.

It would be very helpful indeed if you recall the thread you mentioned to see if it related to the 19 month period (as a maximum) that could be involved.

Many thanks again for your contribution.

Yours sincerely,

Bob Balchin (great grandson of William Balchin, said to be the partner of John Crook).

P.S. WB had a daughter born in Cinderford in Feb 1875 when he described himself as a Colliery Proprietor so we think the (JOINT) colliery interests started in the period 1872 -1875.

I have checked some Mining records for this period and cannot see a fatality relating to a flooded mine in this period.

Which is good news, but a disappointment as it might have narrowed the search :-)
