The Charles family - persecution of Mormons (General)

by vblease, Thursday, August 13, 2009, 20:35 (5655 days ago)

James Charles (born Dec 1838 in Aylburton) and his wife Louisa Williams (born about 1838 in Little Dean), were baptised into the church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) in 1866. In Feb 1868 James died and by the June his wife and their 2 young daughters emigrated to Salt Lake City.
Does anyone have any information of whether Mormons were persecuted in England about that time?
Any other information about the Charles family would be helpful.
Thanks
Val

The CHARLES family - persecution of Mormons

Many thanks for the information. I had found Leonard George CHARLES (born abt Oct 1868 - baptised 22 Nov 1868), and also his son Raynor Henry Leonard CHARLES. But I did not know about Raynor's death - so many thanks.

I was enquiring about the persecution or Mormons because the wife of James CHARLES (abt Dec 1838)went to Salt Lake City in the June of 1868, only 3 months after James died, and I wondered whether the reason for the quick travel to the US (with 2 young girls of 5 and 1) was because of persecution or because they had nowhere to live and the Mormons offered her and her friend Lucy HILL a passage on what was the last wagon train to cross the plains into Salt Lake City. Both husbands of Lucy HILL and Louisa CHARLES were miners and both died, possibly meaning that the remaining family had to vacate their homes.

Thanks again for the information.
