Hale Family Enquiries (General)

by andygibb, Friday, August 14, 2009, 08:31 (5654 days ago)

Nehemiah Hale (b 15/2/1824) married Hannah Herbert (on 5/8/1849) at Westbury on Severn.

Nehemiah's father was Joseph (b 28/7/1776) and he married Mary Baldwin (b 4/11/1781)

I believe Joseph's father was Richard Hale (b approx 1744) who married Elizabeth Jones.

And there the trail runs cold. Can anyone confirm this for me and also take me further back in this line as it is the last line of my tree that I am investigating.

Another piece of information that has come to light is that a Hannah Hale, age 24 was in Gloucester County Gaol on 24th March 1853. This fits with my Hannah (nee Herbert) and wonder if anyone knows how I go about trying to confirm this, as well as find out why she was there!

Really hope you guys on this site can help, through what has become a fantastic source of information. Well done.

Andy

Being direct Herbert descendants we await with trepidation the results of your findings re. the internment of Hannah Hale nee Herbert. Bets are being placed right now as to what her actual crime was, ranging from Bigamy, Murder or husband bashing. Eagerly awaiting your findings.
Regards Jean Herbert

Will be delighted to share this with you as soon as I get it...posted it off yesterday so hopefully get it soon.

Certainly couldn't have been in for long judging by the birth dates of her children, bet it turns out to be something trivial. It was between the birth of Hannah and Nehemiah jnr.

Will let you know and have sent you an email explaining the reason for this research.

Charge: stealing at Ruardean Woodside on March 19th 1853 - one feather bed, the property of Elizabeth Dubberly.

Event of Trial: Not a true bill (insufficient evidence)

Hannah was discharged from prison on April 5th 1853.

by Blorenge, Monday, August 17, 2009, 23:26 (5651 days ago) @ Jean Herbert

Nothing very exciting I'm afraid, Jean - rather mundane actually, and a trifle sad. She was accused of stealing a feather bed. Times were hard and life's little luxuries hard to come by for this young wife and mother! However, there was insufficient evidence for the charge to stick, so she was released shortly afterwards.
