Murder cottage near Ellwood (General)
by Michael, Saturday, August 22, 2009, 18:25 (5646 days ago)
In about 1950 a cottage very near the crossroads between Ellwood and Milkwall, and close to the railway line from Parkend to Coleford, was pointed out to my father by my mother as being where the murder was. I was a child, and probably not meant to hear!
I have wondered since whether a (distant?) relative was involved. I have connections with the Thorne family from Oldcroft/Viney Hill, and the Hoare family from the Ellwood area.
Please can anyone suggest how I might find out more?
Michael

Harry PACE 1928 murder near Ellwood ?

Thanks for the rapid response!
Yes, we branched off the Parkend-Coleford road at Fetter Hill, then went uphill to the crossroads with the railway on the right making a very sharp curve. The cottage was on the right, set back from the road, immediately beyond the railway.
Harry Pace would make sense, for my grandmother, born Emma Hoare, was the daughter of Albert Hoare and Alice Pace, and they lived in Ellwood.
Another branch of the Hoare family - Thomas and Minnie, then after them their daughter May and her husband, Jack Fletcher, farmed at Home Farm in Ellwood.
Was it Harry who did the murder or who was murdered?

Hi Michael
My family took over the cottage known as the Lonely Farm shortly after the trial.
My research indicates that the 'farm' was part of the Dark Hill complex and converted to a small holding about 1870.
My family originally rented the cottage from the owner of the Butchers Arms, Clearwell before buying the cottage in the late 1960's.
I believe Mrs Pace changed her name to Hoore after she was aquitted.
I will dig out some photo of the cottage and post them on our site.
Regards
Tony Jenkins

Hello, Tony,
Thanks for the further information. I would be interested to see a photo. My only memory is of the view of the cottage from the road.
I think Harry Pace was my mother's second cousin. I haven't yet found out anything about his wife, and wonder whether, in view of her change of name, she was originally a Hoare (or Woore, or one of the many spellings of the surname).
In researching the Hoare side of my mother's family I came across Hannah Jenkyns of Ellwood who was Edward Whent Hoare's first wife. She died in 1834 at the age of 21 having had two sons, Edward and William. Her widower later married Mary Davies who bore him seven (I think) children. Hannah's father was William Jenkyns. I wonder if you are related to Hannah.
Best wishes
Michael

Hi Michael.
The Hoore/Woore family and the Jenkins family are very closely linked, as many families are from this area.
Jenny Smith has done a lot of research on the Hoore/Woore family you will be able to connect to her through Curious Fox.
Photos will be posted when I can dig them out of the loft.

Ethel Ella Daisy Hoare was my grandmother and so Alice Pace and Albert Hoare were my great grandparents. I live in Christchurch, New Zealand and I visited the forest five years ago. I was in the house where the murder took place, my cousin currently lives there.

I remember my father, who came from Coalway Lane End, talking about the case. If you haven't come across it already this paper from the Open University is very interesting

Further to all the other information on this thread, I have just noticed that Radio 4's Afternoon Play recently was about this case, and is still available on the BBC IPlayer, "Norman Birkett and the Case of the Coleford Poisoner".

Hi Clareybabes
I guess you know Beatrice Pace after the trial moved to Gloucester, but was hounded out, then moved to Stroud, under her maiden name of Martin, she died in Gloucester Hospital on 1st of March 1973, which was on her daughters birthday, I promised her son Selwyn I would not write or publish anything about her or the family, I have been in contact with Selwyn for well over twenty years, and have visited him in his home, and given him TV and Radio programs about the case, he was not very happy about the book written by Linda, I feel I can talk about it now, as you know, Selwyn has recently died, I also visited your grandmother, wife of Leslie Pace at Silver Trees, and also spent a lot of time with Flossie Pace the "sister" of Harry Pace, she was a happy and jolly lady, there is a book coming out 2011 by a American now living in Germany, and from what I have seen of it so far, should be a interesting read, I also have lots of pics and info on the case, I also have a picture with both Beatrice and Harry Pace on it, as well as old pictures of Rose Cottage, I have met Tony, but not met up with your dad yet, there is some film footage of Beatrice Pace taken by a relation in Bridgewater.I would love to see what pics and info you have, since the death of Selwyn I have started to look into it again, trying to find more info on Sidney Reginald Pritchard Pace, he was meant to be the son of Elizabeth Pace Porter, but I think he may have been the son of Leah Pace and Frederick Pritchard, he shot himself aged 19, I am looking forward to meeting your dad at the weekend, if its still ok, I have posted a picture of Harry and Beatrice Pace on the SunGreen web page, was not able to post it on this site. I will have to log off now, eyes getting blurred.
Regards Keith

there was a Fred Thorne, a Collier of Marsh Lane Ellwood who went to Rose Cottage on Thursday December 29th, to give Harry Pace a shave and massage, he said Harry was very ill and complained of pains in his stomach.
