Edward Edwards married Lucy Jones in 1868, both aged 18 yrs, in Tredegar, Monmouthshire. In 1871 Census, RG10/5319 Folio 62 Page 8 in Tredegar, Edward is 22yrs born in Tredegar; in 1881 census RG11/5242 Folio 57 Page 15 in Tredegar, Richard Edwards aged 50 yrs, is head of house with Edward his son, aged 31 yrs with wife Lucy and Son James. Both Richard & Edward are listed as born in Gladwell, Gloucester, there is an apparent mistranscription by the L.D.S., for a respected colleague from Woolaston does not know of this place - thought it might be Abnell (Abenhall); however neither Richard nor Edward Edwards of their respected ages in 1881 census can be found. Can anyone help, please?

Hi
I would have a punt at Clearwell(Poss Coleford).
Richards age in 1881 could be 56? which would put his birth c1825?.
But this is just a wild shot.

Hi Pete,
On the 1881 Census page, there is a person aged 66, this figure looks different from that used in Richard's age, but as it is the only time that I can find him in any census, I'll look at the Clearwell Richard.

John

Hi Pete,
I have just received that death certificate, there is no indication that it is the Edward Edwards that I am seeking. There was another Edward who died in 1884, whom I shall have to check.

Yes it is, I am aware of this census entry, my problem is defining where & when her husband Edward & father-in-law Richard came from in Gloucestershire.
many thanks,

There is an Edward Edwards, the son of Richard and Elizabeth, who appears in earlier censuses in Tredegar (same road, different house numbers) with a considerable number of siblings and is consistently given as born in Tredegar. However his year of birth was around 1847 which is inconsistent with the 1871 and 1881 censuses and the age 18 you quote at the time of marriage, though it is consistent with the death registration mentioned by pclark on this thread. Richard seems to be consistently born nearer 1806 somewhere in Gloucestershire (it says Upton St Leonards in the 1861 census where he is transcribed as Michael by Ancestry). Obviously that puts a question mark over the age of Richard in 1881 which looks like 50.
Lucy looks like she may be in Roath in the 1901 census living alone, with her daughter Lucy not far away. Her age there is more consistent with the 1891 census with a year of birth around 1853 rather than 1850.
slowhands has listed the full census entries.
I've no idea what the 1881 census is trying to say. It looks like Adnel or Asnel to me, and its not my part of the world anyway.

Hello slowhands,
Many thanks for all the information, I know of the Edwards family in Drybrook Parish and the subsequent children in Tredegar. The children are recorded in the Parish Register of Baptisms at St. George's Church, Tredegar. I have just received the death certificate of Edward Edwards for 1890 and there is no indication that it is the Edward I seek; there is another death registration for an Edward Edwards in 1884 who may be the person and I was not aware of Richard's death in 1884 (co-incidence?). The entries for 1861 and 1871 seem positive that this is the Edwards family I wanted and as I am helping another person, I'll contact him with your information.
regards,
John

Interesting that Edward Edwards d. 1890 doesn't seem to be the correct person as Lucy Edwards has a ten month old daughter in the 1891 census. It would presumably be useful to know who is recorded as her father.

It was on the basis of the daughter that I sent for that certificate, which gives name, age, occupation (Oilman), cause of death (accidentally killed), date of death, date of coroner's inquest but no relations names.

Hi
Lucy Edwards nee Jones was my greatgreat grandmother, married Edward Edwards 16/08/1868.
Gladwell had me stumped for ages.
Richard Edwards died 03/07/1884 in Tredegar
Elizabeth Edwards 12/03/1873 30 Park Row Tredegar.
They had in all that i can find 12 children born in the forest of Dean and Tredegar.
Mary Jane was my great grandmother, i am still trying to find out about Maggie J Edwards, even up to 5 mins ago, sending an email to my cousin, who's mum is quite talkative at the moment about the past.
I have 2 death certs for an Edward Edwards 26/06/1890 thinking this was the one as corresponded to daughter being born, he was 43 an oil man accidently killed. I went up to Tradegar to read the papers, this Edward was not married, so could not be mine, still to the fact of where did Maggie J Edwards come from?
The 2nd death cert. is 07/05/1884 Park Row Tredegar, they have him as 33years old where he should be 38yrs. Collier died from Phthisis and E Edwards was the informant, living in Aberman Glam. i put that down to Enos, and that they lived on the 1881 census at 45b Park row.

PS has anybody managed to find a birth cert. reg. for Maggie J Edwards as i have tried and tried but cannot find one.
Cannot find Maggie on 1901 or 1911 census.I have even thought that she could be the daughter of Mary Jane Edwards, who was working in Cardiff on the 1891 census and on her marriage cert. living at 102 Carlisle Street Splott Cardiff 16/07/1898.
On the 1911 census Frank Rodway her husband has written that they have had 5 children, 5 alive and no deaths, this coresponds to the 5 children she had from 1899 to 1910. my grandmother being her first born.
From stories my dad has told me, Lucy Edwards wore widows weeds from the time Edward died, This made me think would Maggie have been her daughter, or could Maggiehave been her eldest daughters child, unless i can find a birth cert for her, i might never know.
