the 1861 census is incomplete?

Its as complete as any census is :-)

I have scanned thru the sheets (District 21) covering Soudley / Bradley Hill and not obvious signs of a Susan - how sure are you you that they should be on Bradley Hill ?

trying to find her sister too

They were there.

1841 Census. Bradley Hill

William Gwatkin 50
Anne 40
John 18
Susanna 17
George 15
James 12
Thomas 10

1851 Census

No. 8 William Gwatkin 64 Carpenter
No. 17 John Gwatkin 26 Carpenter (Son of William)

Looks like No. 17 John in 1851 Census is the father. I'm afraid I only copied heads of households names for 1851 Bradley Hill. There were a lot of families listed as Bradley Hill, at least 38. Don't understand that.

I don't have anything for Bradley Hill 1861. You might be advised to revisit the whole 1861 roll and recheck. If the 1851 is anything to go by the order of recording was peculiar. You need to include Ayleford, Sewdley Foundry and Sewdley Green.

Best of Luck,

Roger

Yes, I don't have Bradley Hill listings for 1871, only Sewdley, my people were still living in the middle part of Dean Heritage Centre. They would have been about to move to Bradley Hill. The current owners of Rock House did find the builder and his books but surprise, surprise, the one covering 1871 is missing.

thank you for replying i have the gwatkins at bradley hill in 1841 1851 1871 1881 but the 1861 is detrimental as the only death of a john gwatkin i can find is in 1859 susan is a widow in 1871 and another child willie born in 1872 who i suspect may belong to daughter susan but 1861 should have listed the children

I have searched everywhere for them in 1861 to no avail, I did think if John had recently died they could have been with relatives or even the Workhouse
Was someone else in their house in 1861? Many thanks Pat
