Elizabeth Damaris P Prout (General)

by mikehowes, Tuesday, September 01, 2009, 20:57 (5636 days ago)

In early 1886 George Charles Fletcher married Elizabeth Damaris P Prout. On 17 Feb 1886 Elizabeth, aged 24, was buried in Parkend. I cannot find Elizabeth's birth date on this site or on the GRO index.
Does anyone know the birth date and place of Elizabeth?

George (POWELL) PROUT 1817 -1883 Yorkley

by mikehowes, Wednesday, September 02, 2009, 19:52 (5635 days ago) @ slowhands

Thanks for all that.
I have noted another mention of Elizabeth as a witness to a marriage as follows:
"John Jones & Esther Hallaway married at Parkend on 6 May 1877 - witnessed by Elizabeth Damaris Prout Powell".
So there seem to be plenty of clues but so far no positive reference to her birth date and place. Surely she must be in the GRO index under one of her names, so I'll just keep on looking. Thanks for your help.

JOHN MORGAN AND DAMARIS MORSE

by jerigby @, Sunday, May 12, 2013, 21:33 (4287 days ago) @ slowhands

John Morgan born 1815 West Dean married Damaris Morse at Awre on 21 November 1836. Damaris Morse was born 1818 daughter of John Morse and Damaris Bailey.

1841 Census

John MORGAN 25 Head Collier
Damaris MORGAN 20 Wife
Mary MORGAN 5 Daughter
James MORGAN 8 months son

1851 Census at Yorkley

John MORGAN 37 head Coalminer
Damaris MORGAN 38 wife
William MORGAN 87 son

1861 Census not found

1871 Census at Yorkley

John MORGAN 57 Head Coalminer
Damaris MORGAN 53 Wife
William MORGAN 28 Son Iron Miner (Unmarried)
Elizabeth POWELL 10 Granddaughter

1881 Census at Yorkley

John MORGAN 66 Head Coalminer
Damaris MORGAN 63 Wife

1891 Census at Pillowell

Damaris Morgan 83 Head Widow

1901 Census at Pillowell

Damaris MORGAN 83 Widow living on own means

Damaris died in 1901.

In the 1871 census Elizabeth Powell is classed as a grandaughter. The mother is likely to be Mary married to a Powell but I cannot find Mary after 1841 and no marriage to a Powell. Also son James doesn't appear after 1841 and William after 1871. I have searched the FOD Parish Records but can't find any possible burials. Also no record of John Morgan's death after 1881.

Any help would be appreciated.

Janet

JOHN MORGAN of Pillowell, dies Feb 23rd 1886

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Sunday, May 12, 2013, 23:52 (4287 days ago) @ jerigby

Hi Janet,

I suggest this is John's burial, from this site's PRs;

Record_ID: 77081
Entry_Number: 432
Year: 1886
Month: Feb
Day: 28
Surname: MORGAN
Forenames: John
Residence: Pillowell
Age_at_death: 68
Officiating_Minister: Jno. (sic) (John) Jos[ep]h Ebsworth (Vicar)
Event: Burial
Cause_of_death:
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference: P245 IN 1/30
Page_No: 54
Parish_Chapel: Parkend
Soundex: M625

Before finding this PR I searched all "John Morgan" Burials in Monmouth District during 1880-1891 on FreeBMD and this was the closest match age-wise. Now I see the precise location fits too, his widow Daramis was living in Pillowell at 1891 Census.

From the Wills section of this site;

How about, probably much more likely I think.
Old Croft is only 1/2 mile from Pillowell/Yorkley so seems to fit the family's home area from 1851 etc Census'.
Please do you have the household's place of residence for the 1841 Census, to compare against ??

This twit said "But why wasn't he on 1851 Census with the family ? Perhaps he dies before 1851 ?"
You correctly point out "This burial is in 1856 after the 1851 census, so he is not dead ;-)"

Ooops..... ! :-0

I could say "he was just resting", or maybe "I was wondering who'd spot my deliberate mistake", but I think this one even surpasses anything the great Captain Mainwaring could do.

If I had ever earned a stripe you could rightly tear it off.
Sorry, I'm going for a lie down now !!.

Thanks S ! :-)

Elizabeth Damaris (POWELL) PROUT 1862-1886 Yorkley

by jerigby @, Tuesday, May 14, 2013, 21:22 (4285 days ago) @ slowhands

How helpful you are on this site. I was trying to place an Elizabeth POWELL born c 1871 on the census as grandaughter of John Morgan and Damaris Morse. They had only one daughter Mary so I knew she must be her mother but couldn't find a marriage for her. I still can't but I believe she married George Powell PROUT. No wonder I could not find a marriage for her to a POWELL. Elizabeth turned out to be Elizabeth Damaris Powell PROUT There are quite a few Damaris's in my Morse tree so I knew this was right. Elizabeth married George Charles FLETCHER in 1886 but she appeared to die soon after her marriage.

Also a bonus was her brother John Morse Powell PROUT born in Yorkley and emigrated to Australia. So thanks to this forum I have been able to grow my family tree.

Thanks again.

Janet
