A. Ellis living at Bank St. Coleford 1907 (General)
by rookancestrybest , United Kingdom, Wednesday, November 04, 2009, 20:57 (5572 days ago)
Postcards from Coleford sent to members of my family in 1907 were signed by A. Ellis of Bank Street. They were beautifully written (both handwriting-wise and linguistically) and mention someone called Wilfred/Wilfrid. Does anyone know how A. Ellis and Wilfred might connect with the Rooks, Prossers, Pritchards, Steads, Morgans...? My family members (surname Rook) were in touch with them, probably on an ongoing basis, as the cards thank them for postcards which they had sent to A. Ellis and Wilfred/Wilfrid. I know that members of my family visited The Forest of Dean for decades after they had moved away (they moved away in the 1870s and members of the family visited through to about the 1920s or 1930s) and that at least one member of my family regularly went on holiday with some relatives from Coleford and S. Wales e.g. to North Devon and to coastal resorts in Wales e.g. Mumbles.
Thanks.

A. Ellis living at Bank St. Coleford 1907

I am wondering if this could be the link?
1911 census Bank Street, Coleford.
Wilfrid A. Pritchard born 1881 West Dean
Annie Pritchard born 1883 English Bicknor
Married for 2 years had 1 child which had died.
Marriage June 1/4 1908 Monmouth 11a 97
Wilfrid Augustine Prichard
Caroline Elizabeth E.A. Ellis
1901 census Folly Farm English Bicknor
Thomas Ellis 1838
Fanny Ellis 1847
William Ellis 1874
Caroline Ellis 1883
Thomas 1876
on baptisms for English Bicknor there is a Elizabeth Ann Ellis Baptiseed 15 October 1882 parents Thomas and Fanny
Are Annie, Elizabeth Ann and Caroline Elizabeth E.A. one and the same person and could they also be A. Ellis prior to her marriage to Wilfrid ?
Just a thought!

Thank you again for pointing me in the correct direction -

Again everyone's help on this is much appreciated.
I agree with Slowhands as there is a Wilfred Pritchard who I have as the son of Arthur Pritchard and Mary Teresa (nee Rooke). Caroline E.A. Ellis is therefore likely to be the wife and to have called herself by one of her middle names, as the cards were sent the year before they married they would probably have been engaged then which explains it all. I think I'll go with Wilfrid A Pritchard as I had him on my family tree as Wilfred A or N Pritchard. I know that May Gwendoline Pritchard and Zita were also both related to Arthur, the former being his sister and the latter being either his sister or cousin, I have photographs of both of these so I think you've solved the mystery for me.
P.S. I had somehow overlooked this Wilfred when I had scanned my family tree for Wilfreds to see if there were any to fit the bill!

Morgans

I have never managed to find how the Morgans were related but I think my Morgans were of an earlier generation. The problem is that researching Morgan in that part of Britain is almost as difficult as Smith and Brown due to the sheer numbers involved!!! My mother always said that there were people called Morgan in the family, one of whom she said had an M.A. from Oxford. She said it was Henry. She also used to speak of Fanny Morgan. Slowhands once found some info. on the latter but I could find no links with my own family apart from them living close by. However, I have found a scrap of paper in the last three and a half years with Thomas Morgan's name written on it, in copperplate handwriting with the date Sept. 8th [or 6th?]1854 and Culham College, Oxon. after it (there is some geometry on the back of it in the same handwriting). Culham College was a teacher training college then and seems to be an institute for religious studies now.
This does not necessarily rule out your Morgans. I have found that the Forest of Dean was a very small close community and it is possible that people are related in more complex ways e.g. my great-great grandmother married her stepfather's brother and it is also possible that the Addams family married into the Rooke family in two different generations too.

Arthur William Morgan Prichard married Mary Teresa Rooke (bmd Sept 1872 Aston 6d 548). They had six children Fanny, Joseph, Wilfrid Augustine, Arthur, David Thomas and May Gwendoline. Arthur, David Thomas and Joseph all died in WW1 1915, 1916 and 1917.
Wilfrid married Caroline Elizabeth Esther Ann Ellis (known as Annie) and after losing their first child went on to have a daughter Florence Mary and son Kenneth Arthur William.
I would grateful if you could send me a copy of any correspondence/photos you may have relating to Wilfred and Annie and Arthur and Mary or the originals if you don’t need them as I am Kenneth’s son (Wilfred’s Grandson).

That makes you my cousin four times removed! I only have the two post cards, the front of which are the old photographs of Coleford I posted on this site. They were sent to Loui/Louisa Jane Rook who was my great-great Auntie. Her photograph has already been posted on this site in the photographs section along with that of May Gwendoline Pritchard. Do you know who Cousin Zita Pritchard was? I have a very tiny picture of her which might not scan well but if you want it I can try to do it for you. I have now scanned both sides for you and will work out how to send them by e-mail in a few moments as I think there's a way without needing to post your e-mail address on here!
