Lydbrook WW2 air raid shelter (General)

I wonder if anyone remembers what purpose the cave running from the bank behind the pop factory under the railway line and tunnel originally was excavated for? When I was young it was used as an air raid shelter during the war and had bus seats running down each side. There appears to be a works in front of the opening in the photo from 1916 on the photo gallery pages and I was wondering if they were connected in some way. The cave ran (from memory) quite a way towards the lime kilns. Although I was born in Lydbrook (1925) and lived there until I married (1946) I cannot recall ever hearing anyone say!

not 100% sure but there were some old quarry workings on Hangerberry Hill so its possible that this was a quarry /mine shaft at one stage

My husband who lived in Lydbrook until 1954 remembers mushrooms being grown in there after the war. he said exactly the same as you Maurice it was used as an air raid shelter with bus seats in there.
What it was used for before the war he does not know.
