The Hoggins St. Briavels - Williams (General)
by Akeene121, Sunday, December 27, 2009, 12:08 (5520 days ago)
I've recently found a record of a Victor WILLIAMS (my grandfather) who when married aged 18 was living at "The Hoggins St. Briavels"
I have been searching for this place and seem to come up with variations on the name in the same area, mainly including:
Little Hoggins, Bearse Common, St Briavels, Lydney, Gloucestershire
Hoggins Farm, St Briavels, Lydney, Gloucestershire
AND Great Hoggins Farm, St Briavels, Lydney, Gloucestershire
Which one is it? and are there any others that could fit the name?
Thanks.

I have been told by my Mum since writing the original post that "The Hoggins" as it was known by the family was where her grandad (Victor Williams' Father) lived. There was, apparently, three cottages - one of which they lived in, which was a small holding and Victor Williams used to ride horses there. It was always known in the family as "The Hoggins" and never by any name.
I belive that this would indicate that "The Hoggins" is actually Little Hoggins, Bearse Common, St Briavels, Lydney, Gloc. rather than Hoggins Farm cottage or Great Hoggins Farm?
Does anyone know if this would be correct or not? I am still searching for any pictures or letters, etc we have that may indicate where it was.
Thanks

I think from your Description, you are looking for Hoggins Farm Cottages, which are on the St Briavels to Bream Road - if you go into Google Maps, the Postcode is GL15 6RA. My Dad always referred to these as The Hoggins too. They used to have a Field or two behind them and I seem to remember they were once Farmworkers Cottages attached to Great Hoggins Farm. Hope this helps.

I have been told that it was originally two cottages but a third was then built. In two of them there were Williamses living and then a set of neighbours in the third house. Does anyone know who moved in next and when etc?

The James family lived there for a while I believe as The Hoggins was in one of the records I have but would you believe I cant find it at the moment.
So will keep looking. But I have been interested in that for some time.

I don't suppose that it was John Awre James and Sarah Ann living at The Hoggins because one of their daughters married the Williams who lived in it. Did they inherit it?
Thanks for all the help everyone

Found it.
Mary Ann James married Edwin Mallet from there so I am assuming Hiram the father and maybe other siblings were living there in 1878.

Do you know how long they were living there? I know that Williamses were living in "The Hoggins" by 1930 at least.
