Josiah Edwards and Jane Doward (General)

by jwoodman, Tuesday, December 29, 2009, 11:05 (5518 days ago)

My ancestor Josiah Edwards was born in 1805 and I have his wife Jane Doward born in 1809. In the parish records I have found a marriage for them in the Parish Church of Mitcheldean dated 12th May 1828. However, neither Josiah's or Jane's parents names are given. I already have Josiah's parents from another source and I am now trying to trace Jane's parents. Josiah and Jane have a son Richard baptised at Coleford Parish Chapel on 23rd November 1828, which probably explains why the parents names are not on the record. I have a baptism for a Jane Doward on 26th April 1807 with parents William and Esther Doward but I am not entirely sure if this is my Jane. I have also just found out that if William and Esther Doward were Jane's parents then William was dead by the time Jane got married, so thus may explain why he was not named on the marriage record. Does anyone know of a way to trace Jane's parents for certain. Thank you for your help.

Dowards and Morgans

by jwoodman, Tuesday, December 29, 2009, 15:20 (5518 days ago) @ slowhands

Thanks for your help with that. I am a bit confused as I have found the baptism records of a Elizabeth (13/03/1794) and a John Doward (13/10/1796) but on these their mother is given as Hester and not Esther as on all the other 8 children and the residence is given as Ellwood and not Clearwell. Also, I have another John baptised 14/10/1798 but I can't find a burial for the first John so I am unsure if he is part of the same family. Is there any way of telling if John and Elizabeth are part of the same family as the other 8 children? Also, I found a marriage for a William Doward and an Esther Morgan on 10/07/1792 but again neither of their parents are given and I can't find a baptism of an Esther Morgan that would fit. Is there any way of tracing her any futher? Thank you once again for your help.

given as Hester and not Esther as on all the other 8 children
and
the residence is given as Ellwood and not Clearwell.

I would not be too concerned with either - spellings and transcription should be viewed with an open mind :-) - Ellwood and Clearwell are adjacent and about a mile apart so its the "right" area !

now as you go back past 1800 the records get more patchy but don't give up !

Had another look at the CD - the burial of William DOWARD (Labourer) 30 September 1816 - was at Newland,

The FoD records - have the name transcribed as William DRISARD, age 54 residence: Clearwell

with notes: in this record surname was not clear, so the best guess was given.

William DOWARD/DRISARD
