Bessie Dew Nash bap 4-Sep-1904 St Peter Clearwell
Daughter of Amy Dew Nash, no father recorded.
Oral family history passed down has recorded the father as Hulin first name not known. He apparently did a runner to Canada on finding out about the pregnancy.

We know that Bessie recorded her grand parents as her parents when marrying William Thomas Wood Jenkins 1-Aug-1927 St Peter, Clearwell.

Does anybody have any information as to which of the Hulin family could be the father ?

You might get lucky and find a family that also has the same "oral" history passed down; sadly I suspect you may draw a blank. The "did a runner" may just be a story to protect.

I have research our HULIN family quite extensively, and the only male HULIN that I know went to Canada, was Reginald Byron Harold HULIN. Unfortunately he migrated in 1885.

@Don -hi! Do you have any information on Benjamin Hulin b 1878 to James and Edith Ann? He seems a likely candidate concerning the paternity of my grandmother. The 1901 census shows he lives at Clearwell Meend - very close to Stock Farm! I can't find anything beyond the census information. Any leads you have would be most appreciated.

Bessie Nash was my grandmother.......This is news to me that her father did a runner! My understanding was that her father was a prosperous farmer in Clearwell - they lived at Tudor Farmhouse. She was the youngest of a fairly large brood.....I guess it's possible her grandparents raised her. Hmm....She married my grandfather, William Wood-Jenkins and was disowned by most of her family for marrying beneath her station; he was a miner. She passed away in 1999. If anyone has anymore information concerning her father, I would be really interested!

MPGriffiths -thanks for posting this....interesting to know Amy met Joseph in Newport -having had a child out of wedlock stigmatized a woman, but I guess being so far (in those days) form Clearwell she was able to make a new life for herself. I'm curious to know if my grandmother was recognized as Amy's daughter while she was growing up. It seems Andrew Price knew of my grandmother in relationship to his grandmother (Amy) and there was an oral history passed down.

searching tinternet gives a few tantalising hits to a "Nash Family History" website, albeit one which doesn't allow easy opening ?. I do hope you've seen it and hopefully with full access compared to my snippets ?

One of that site's contributors is Andrew Price, presumably the originator of this thread. He supplies this Obituary to Amy's father James Nash, I sincerely hope he won't mind me re-posting:

The Obituary of James Dew Nash...born about 1856, died May 14, 1927.

THE LATE MR. JAMES DEW NASH

A typical son of old established Forest family was buried in Clearwell Cemetery on Wednesday last week. James Dew Nash. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. George Nash of Sling, (brother of John and William Nash, who were thoroughly well known throught the Forest). He had lived four years over the "alloted span". He was 73 years, was exceedingly active and youthful.

Two virtues stand out in his life - he was practically immune from worry - he refused to worry - and he preferred to enlarge upon his own shortcomings rather than discuss those of other people.

He was shrewd and had long vision, and his sound judgement was often sought for. He never craved the limelight of publicity, but any good cause could be assured of his practical assistance.

During the last quarter of a century he turned his attention to farming, and for 10 years tenanted Stock Farm at Clearwell, and for the past 8 or 10 years, Drybrook Farm.

He had been confined to the house since Christmas, and an affected heart gradually weakened down it's victim, and in spite of the constant medical attention of Dr. O'Driscoll he was forced to take to his bed in May, and bore what proved to be his last illness with remarkable fortitude, passing quietly away on May 14th, leaving a widow and six grown up sons and daughters. The funeral was attended by a very large number of people, drawn from all ranks, who wished to manifest their respect and sympathy. Previous from starting from the house "Rock of Ages" was sung by those gathered around the coffin. the bearers were: Messers H. Cecil, M. Hoare, Wm. Baker, and side-bearers: Messrs Fred Jones, Rd Jones, Jno Jones, H. Teague, (Trowgreen), H. Cook, and F. Williams.

The breastplate of the polished elm coffin was inscribed, "James Dew Nash, died 14th May, aged 74 years."

The principal mourners were: Fred, Jim, Will (sons). Mrs. Bessie Wintle, Mrs. Maud Howells, Mrs. Joe Price (daughters). Geo, and Milson Nash (brothers). Mrs. Jas. Nash and Mrs. Rose Kear (sisters). Bessie Nash, Jack Nash and Fred Nash (grandchildren). Mr. Geo. Howells, Mr. S. Wintle (sons in law). James Nash (brother in law). Mrs. Wm. Nash (sister in law). Mrs. May Elsmore, Mrs. May Wintle (nieces).

A large quantity of beautiful wreaths were brought to the house, in token of respect and friendship. the principal ones were: In loving memory of my dear husband from his loving wife. In loving memory from Bessie and Will Drybrook Farm. In loving memory from Jim and Eugenie and Isabel, Burnt House, Sling. In loving memory of dear Dad from Florrie, Fred and grandchildren Milkwall. Clearly James was a much admired and highly regarded gentleman.

It's of interest that among the many mourners are "Mr & Mrs Sydney HULIN of Ellwood", a possible "link" to the alleged father of Amy Dew Nash, perhaps ???.

As you know the Nash family lived for some years at Stock Farm, Clearwell. I don't know any detail but archeological excavations were performed there and are documented by H. Atkinson in Volume 2, Page 28 of the FoD Local History Society's Journal the "New Regard".
Some Journal editions may be read in FoD Public libraries eg Cinderford, or individual article reprints are available from the Society.

"Most of the houses that formed Clearwell village in 1608 were replaced by plain stone cottages in the late 18th century and the 19th, but several older farmhouses survive. At Stank Farm, north of Lower Cross, a small 17th-century house with a prominent central porch was extended to the north in the 19th century. The former Stock Farm (in 1992 comprising Tudor Cottage and Tudor Farmhouse Hotel) in the east street is an L-shaped 17th-century house with an 18th-century wing added on the east."

Hi Hilary, you're most welcome. Hopefully you could read the other Nash FH site links too, careful websearching may find more such "cached" pages.

There are quite a few FoD PRs for Sydney Hulins, mostly in the Clearwell Parish area it seems, although I think this must be the aforementioned "Hulins of Ellwood".

@ Jeff, after more research on the Hulins, it seems of three brothers living in Clearwell - Benjamin is the most likely father. His older brothers - Sidney and Earnest were married before 1904 when Bessie Dew Nash was born and were both new fathers each having children in 1901. There was another brother, but he died as an infant. I can't find anything on Benjamin, other than a 1901 Census that puts him living in 103 Clearwell Meend which is VERY close to Stock Farm. Maybe he did do a runner after finding out Amy was pregnant with his child!
If anyone can help me piece this puzzle together I'd be most grateful....

Hi Hilary,
how interesting !

For reasons unknown to me this week I can get free access to the 1911 WALES Census (but no other bar the usual 1881 !?) on Ancestry even tho I'm not currently subscribed. This is very handy as on the later Census's many West Dean households in the Coleford, Lydbrook etc area were considered to be "Wales" (as Monmouth, just across the border, was the nearest large town so registration centre, rather than Westbury On Severn say which traditionally governed the eastern Forest. This website is a great guide to these local admin Districts and how their names/boundaries changed over the years.

Indeed, inmy experience some FH Census search-engines rather-annoyingly list Wales Census results separately/way-after the England ones, even though many of the England ones might be much farther away...?. Saying that, Ancestry seems to be improving in this respect.

Anyhow, I think this is Benjamin in 1911 Census, if you can't access it yourself I have downloaded the form image and will happily send to you if you like. Perhaps Benjamin didn't like being past 30 years old...?

THE SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A COLEFORD INSURANCE AGENT
At a special session held at Coleford on Thursday, before Messrs. T. T. Taylor and S. J. Thomas, Charles Bosworth, an insurance agent, of Whitecliff, was again brought up in custody charged by P. S. Price with breaking into a dwelling house at Sling and stealing £1 15s. 9d, in money, the property of Benjamin Hulin, son of James Hulin, a mason, of the same place.- After hearing the evidence of James Nash, Emma Jenkins, Benjamin Hulin, Elizabeth Hulin, Albert Hoare, and William Evans, who all deposed to seeing the prisoner in the neighbourhood on the evening of the robbery, and P. S. Price and P. C. Wiltshire, who arrested the accused, the prisoner elected to give evidence. He denied that he was anywhere near Hulin’s house that day. Benjamin Hulin (re-called) said he was certain prisoner was the man whom he saw in the bedroom and who forced him on the bed and tried to stifle him with the bedclothes. He knew prisoner very well indeed, as he went and took work which witness was compelled to give up owing to ill health.- The Chairman said prisoner would be committed to take his trial at the forthcoming Gloucestershire Assizes. He would be allowed bail in the sum of £50 and two sureties of £25 each.

The Gloucester Citizen, published on 24 June 1903, reported on the Gloucester Trinity Quarter Sessions. James Bosworth was charged with stealing £1 15s 9d, the monies of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hulin, of Sling. The jury, after a short deliberation, found him guilty, and he was sentenced to three months hard labour.

Here's another mention of Ben HULIN of Ellwood, plus many other local names including M.E and Reuben NASH, as reported by the Cardiff Weekly Mail of 15th October 1910.

There was again a large number of sheep-owners summoned at Coleford Court for failing to deliver up "Form C," contrary to the regulation of the Board of Agriculture, respecting the sheep-dipping orders, and the following fines were inflicted;— John Thomas, Edenwall Farm, 27s.; Hiram Hale and Alfred Hale colliers, Broadwell, 17s. each; Benjamin Brown, colliery proprietor, Broadwell, 17s.; Charles Morris, farmer. Having been trying to find my ancestors elsewhere, I have only now returned to the FoD website and noticed this posting.

I first want to thank Jeff for the obituary - it is this sort of thing that adds colour to our ancestors lives (and deaths!). However, I would like to point out one error. James Nash was not the eldest son of George Nash of Sling. Thomas Nash, my great grandfather born 1844, was the eldest. He was the only son of George Nash and Ann Long, married in Newland in 1842. I do not know what happened to Ann but she seems to have disappeared so in the 1851 census Thomas is with his grandmother, Sarah Carlisle in Tidenham. George then married Sarah Drew in 1861, just a few weeks before the census which showed that they had three children, including James, before they were married. Of course, in the absence of any information about Ann, it is possible that the marriage was bigamous.
