Death or burial record of Daniel HARDING (General)

by unknown, Monday, January 25, 2010, 20:58 (5491 days ago)

I am looking for a record of death or burial of my great great grandfather Daniel Harding. I have him on the 1891 census for East Dean, Westbury on Severn age 46 years. The next record I have is a marriage certificate for his son George Harding at the Holy Trinity Church, Drybrook on 23rd Sept 1894 in which Daniel is described as deceased. I have searched BMD certs on ancestry and free BMD and the parish records on this site but can find no record of death or burial. Can anybody suggest where else to look for this information.Any suggestions greatfully received.

HARDING/JACKSON family of Baunton

Death of Daniel Harding, 46 - CANNOCK (well spotted Paul)

As I live in Cannock, (Staffordshire - surrounded by Cannock Chase) record of coal mining in this area from 1298 to late 20th century, and I see Daniel's son Robert was a coal miner, so there is a good chance, the family came briefly to work in the mines (may be he had an accident)

There is on the 1901 census for Cannock, a Charles HARDING and his family age 51 - Coal Hewer, born Ranton, (poss. Baunton) Gloucestershire.

1901 Census, Cannock
Watling Street (which is the main A5)

Charles HARDING - 51, Miner Coal Hewer, Underground, born Glos. Ranton

1891 Census, Watling Street, Cannock

Charles HARDING - 45, Coal Miner, born Gloucester
Esther - 42 - born Hereford, Watford
Rosa CHINGLES - Boarder age 8, born Durham South Shields

1881 Census, Ruardean,
Charles HARDING age 33, Coal Miner, Lodger, born Baunton, Glos.

FreeBDM: Charles HARDING married Esther SLATER, Dec Qtr 1881 Westbury on S

On FOD records. Charles HARDING age 32 (father John HARDING) married Esther Slater (Widow) age 43 at Littledean 21 October 1881.
think is a good lead on the family connection with Cannock etc.

1871 Census, Chedworth, Glos

John HARDING - 60 Ag. Lab. Baunton
Rachel HARDING - 45 - Baunton
Job HARDING - Son age 45, born Baunton

(should the 1881 census for Daniel read Bauton, and not Banton?

Is this the family 1861 Census - Coln St Aldwins

John HARDING - 51 Oseman - born Glos. Badminton
Rachel HARDING - 48, born, Glos, Badminton
Daniel HARDING - 15, Farm Labourer, born Glos. Baunton

Thank you very much, such a lot of information and greatly appreciated.
It looks like my Daniel might have gone to Cannock for work then as his brother Charles appears to be there. Their dates and places of birth fit in for this to match. I am unclear about a son called Robert though as I have never come across a son by this name, so I don't know if this throws things out a little.

As Daniels widow was still in East Dean in 1901 census I had just presumed that he would have been buried here rather than anywhere else. Was it ususal for someone to be buried away from the family, particularly the spouse or did this boil down to money etc in having to bring the body home to them I wonder?

I think I meant George not Robert

Daniel did have a son George who was my great grandfather and was a coal miner. I have found him on 1901 census in East Dean married with (at this point) 3 children. He later moved to south Wales.

Can I ask where the info regarding him and Daniel being miners in Cannock is held and if this is accessable.

Thanks again.

There is a web site -

Cannock Chase Mining Historical Society (whom I am sure would guide you in the right direction)

www.ccmhs.co.uk/homepage.htm

plus many books in our local library. When I visit next time I'll ask in the Reference Section.

As the Death Certificate was issued in Cannock District, perhaps that doesn't mean he was buried here, although it would mean a train ride to the FOD -

I've never posted in a forum before, but this item has me intrigued.
I think my reply is to juliem, if you are researching the John Harding/Rachel Jackson ancestry then i may be able to assist you.
Do the following children of John & Rachel mean anything to you
Anne Harding B about 1832
Job Harding B about 1835
George Harding B 1837 My 3rd Great Grandfather
Alfred Harding B 1840
Thomas Harding B 1842
Daniel Harding B 1844
Charles Harding B 1846
All the children are my 2nd Great Uncles and Aunts

All births were in Baunton/Filkins etc

The research by m p griffiths is remarkably accurate, so i thought i would try to help you.

The poss christening of Rachel Jackson is spot on (well done) her parents were
William Jackson and Rachel Cooper.

Julie if these people are your ancestors then i have several more generations into the 17th century.

Hope we are related because there are a lot of us still alive and kicking.
We have quite a few decendants alive in New South Wales.
Hope to hear from you soon
Roger

Thanks for this. I don't know if he visited Cannock and have no real way of finding this out. The only death I've found before on BMD is for a Daniel Harding in Westbury on Severn but he was 89 which is too old for my Daniel.

Hi Julie

Try searching another christian name, as I found my great grandfather's name had been change three times before I found the information I wanted. Because people were not very literate during the 1800s they usually made mistakes with spelling.

Hope this helps.

[Please note, I have changed the subject of your post from 'Need Help!' to the more appropriate subject of 'Death or burial record of Daniel HARDING'. By changing the subject people now know what the contents of your query are about.]

This is possibly your Daniel which was taken from the burial Parish Records on this website. The age of death does not fit but it is possible that the age of death was either wrongly recorded or mistakenly transcribed as it was hard to decipher. If you are unable to find a better match for the burial, I suggest you do a possible transcription error request. Not many reached the age the age of 89 in those days, especially if they were a miner.

Death or burial record of Daniel HARDING

by cmfenton @, Ferndown, Dorset, Tuesday, January 26, 2010, 11:18 (5490 days ago) @ admin

There's a BMD entry that matches the record found by Admin - though in the Ancestry records it has been indexed incorrectly as Westbury, Wiltshire

Name: Daniel Harding
Estimated birth year: abt 1803
Year of Registration: 1892
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Age at Death: 89
District: Westbury
County: Wiltshire
Volume: 5a
Page: 186

The image shows Westbury S (ie Westbury on Severn) which is usual for FoD deaths.

If this is part of the family that is being investigated, then it would seem to be for an earlier generation.

Thanks for this, sorry about the subject heading but 1st time I've posted anything so unsure what to put.

I had come accross this Daniel in a previous search of BMD records. Unfortunately I sent for the death cert before I found this wonderful site so thus found out he did die at age 89 years of "Natural decay"(so this is transcribed correctly. I tried various other searches but had been unable to find another Daniel Harding until I posted this and now it looks possible that he might have died in Cannock.
