Thomas John JONES, born 1917 East Dean (General)
by Rachandgarry, Tuesday, February 02, 2010, 16:50 (5483 days ago)
Hi there
New to the message board, so hi there!
Wonder if anyone can help me at all, or suggest where else I might be able to look;
My grandad was Thomas John Jones, born January 1917 in "Morse Road, East Dean R.D." - firstly, where would this be on a map, I haven't been able to find it on any maps - either old or new :(
On his birth certificate from 1917, his father is listed as Birt Jones, and his mother is listed as Mary Jones, formerly Mansell.
I have Mary Mansell in the 1911 census, as a servant and 'single', so theoretically they should have married between 1911 and 1917 - but I have been unable to find any such marriage. Can anyone else see it or suggest where else I could look?
I have found a marriage for Mary Mansell to a Lionel Bosley, in Q3 1913.
I have also found a marriage for Birt Jones to a Mary Coopey, in Q2 1916.
I know my grandad had a brother, Stan, the only Stan Jones born in East Dean in the right period of time is born in Q4, 1920 - and the index lists his mother's maiden name as Mary Coopey!
Everything seems to be pointing to the theory that my grandad's parents weren't married and that he was born out of wedlock. Given that Birt Jones was married to Mary Coopey in the summer of 1916, and my grandad was born in January 1917 but lists his mother as Mary Mansell - I wonder if he ever even knew his father other than by name. At the time of his birth, Mary Mansell would have been married to Lionel Bosley.
I wonder if my granded grew up with his mother and Lionel, or his father and Mary Cooper??
Anyone know of any way I can find out more, or of any local resources that I could use?
Many thanks in advance
Rachel

Hi Rachel
Morse Road seems to be in Drybrook. This link has maps of the East Dean and the West Dean, and you will see where Drybrook is :)

Sarah COOPEY and Thomas MANSELL
by Rachandgarry, Tuesday, February 02, 2010, 20:20 (5483 days ago) @ Simone
Hi again
Through speaking to some very clever people, I have another possibility to consider... (and I like this one much more lol)
In 1899, a little girl named Mary was born to parents Sarah COOPEY and Thomas MANSELL. The birth was registered in the ROSS registration district.
This couple married later that year so Sarah COOPEY, and Mary COOPEY became Sarah and Mary MANSELL.
Just a year and a half later, in the census of 1901, the family were living at Morse Lane, Ruardean:
Thomas MANSELL Head
Sarah MANSELL Wife
Mary MANSELL Dau - aged 1
Francis MANSELL Dau - just born
Morse Lane Ruardean is right next to Morse Road (where my grandad was born).
So, I think Mary lived as Mary MANSELL but for the purposes of her marriage, she had to be married as her birth name Mary COOPEY. It is wholly possible that at the time of registering her first son's birth in 1917, my grandad, when she was asked for her maiden name she gave it as MANSELL and then when the time came to register their second son's birth in 1920, Uncle Stan, she answered that her maiden name was COOPEY.
I am so hoping this is true, but I will need to do some more searching for records that back it up.
How very exciting!
Rachel

Hi again Rachel
Morse Road goes from Nailbridge up to Ruardean and Morse Lane is a small road that branches off from Morse Road halfway along it and goes to Drybrook.
These can be found on the maps on this site.

Hi Rachel
Just go to Parish Records and experiment. This is a fantastic site with so much information due to the superb efforts of the transcribers and Admin. Slowhands, I'm sure, will also give you a helping hand as he seems to be the website expert. (Not sure when he sleeps as he always seems to be there to help).

Hi again
From the 1911 census, I can see that Thomas and Sarah Mansell had 7 children in total, 4 of which were still alive in 1911 but 3 died.
Is there anywhere (other than the GRO index) I can find the names of these children?
Also, the info from a few posts ago that has references to school rooms - where is that on the parish records? If I just put Mansell in, too much comes up and I can't tell which are my Mansells...but I don't know the names to put in so I get the results.
Help!

You've just jogged a memory for me, Gwen... Auntie Gwen! I remember Grandad having a sister too now. She moved to Louisiana and married a guy called John Brouilette. I stayed with them for a while when I was 6 or 8 - he taught me to ride my bike!!
Thank you!!!

one way to get there is play "family tree algebra" - use the Census data and take the births then compare with the deaths for the period and 3 or 4 contenders will surface :-)

MANSELL, Morse, Ruardean Hill area
by Rachandgarry, Wednesday, February 03, 2010, 13:11 (5482 days ago) @ slowhands
Hi again,
Thank you for that slowhands - I'm understanding a little more now.
Before I venture further finding childrens baptisms and siblings etc I want to do everything I can to be sure that I have the right family this time. There are several Mary Coopeys, Mary Mansells and Sarah Coopeys in the area, at a similar time so I am nervous to grab a family and run with it so to speak. Here's what I can piece together - does it make sense, do the locations match up and can you spot anything that doesn't sound quite right...if so please tell me, so I can re-think.
1879 (approx) a Sarah Coopey born, either Churcham (1901 cen) or Gloucester (1911 cen)
1881 (approx) a Tom Cook Mansell born, either Ruardean (1901 cen) or East Dean (1911 cen)
1899 Mary Coopey born, Berry Hill (1901 cen) or Weston under Penyard (1911 cen)
1899 Tom Cook Mansell and Sarah Coopey marry, Weston under Penyard. His father is William Mansell. Her father is Thomas Coopey.
1901 family living at Morse Lane, Ruardean. Comprises:
Thomas Mansell - age 21 Coal miner
Sarah Mansell - age 22
Mary Mansell - age 1
Francis Mansell - under 1 month
1911 family living at Harry Hill, Drybrook. Comprises:
Thomas Mansell - age 30 Coal miner Hewer. at Colliery.
Sarah Mansell - age 30
Mary Mansell - age 11
William Mansell - age 4 born East Dean
Harold Mansell - age 3 born East Dean
George Mansell - age 1 born East Dean
The census shows the couple have had 7 children, 4 of which are living and 3 who have died. It says they have been married 11 years.
So, theoretically in the census' of 1891, 1881 Tom and Sarah would be living separately. I am struggling to find them with family that match the information from the marriage entry in the parish record. Can anyone spot either/both of them in 1881 or 1891? I can only see a Sarah that fits with the info, as daughter of Joseph and Isabella Coopey - not Thomas as the parish marriage record states. Help!
I need to obtain the marriage certificate for Mary Coopey and Birt Jones, in Westbury on Severn, does anyone know which record office I would have to get it from? I've always ordered everything from the GRO direct but it might be quicker to go directly to the office and pick it up.
Thank you so much for helping me with this, it is still very emotional - I feel scared to hope that it will turn out ok and that I will be able to find that this Mary Coopey turned Mansell *is* the right one but I am desperate for it to be so.

Sarah Coopey 1879, Ruardean, Churcham. Father's name?
by Rachandgarry, Wednesday, February 03, 2010, 17:33 (5482 days ago) @ hawdon
Dave,
I've just logged on and seen slowhands' last post - there are hardly words!
***THANK YOU*** slowhands!
I had trawled through the census' myself and come up with similar records. The detail that is troubling me, is that on the parish record for the marriage of Sarah Coopey and Tom Mansell, Sarah's father is listed as Thomas Coopey.
The only census I can find has her father as Joseph Coopey.
Is there any way I can verify the original parish record says Thomas?
I've noted a marriage between what I assume is Sarah's sister Martha, and Tom's brother George - and this lists Martha's name as Joseph. These were the witnesses for Sarah and Tom's marriage.
Confusion reigns, lol!

I'd order a copy of the Cert from the GRO - then check what it says occasionaly there are transcription errors from the Parish records - sometimes the original is poor and a best attempt is done, sometimes there is an error and you can submit a correction suggestion :-)

Hi again
Certificate is on order, as soon as I get it I will update. In the meanwhile I am going to gather all the information I have and try to make sense of it.
Can I get your opinion on the 1901 census for William Mansell?
With him and Maria marrying in 1892 after his first wife Jane obviously passed away, she then passed away as Maria Mansell in 1895, her address on the parish burial record is Harry Hill, Drybrook.
There are 2 entries for William Mansell on the 1901 census of Westbury on Severn Reg District....
RG13 piece 2419 folio 45 page 3 lists him living with George and Martha Mansell and their children, as a widow, age 55, a labourer on the roads, born in Herefordshire. The address is The Meend, East Dean, Drybrook.
RG13 piece 2419 folio 72 page 27 lists him living alone, as a widow, age 59, a general labourer, born in Lea Bailey. The address is Harry Hill, Drybrook.
How can I tell which one is 'my' William Mansell?
Thanks
Rachel x
