Cordwainer (General)

Can anyone please tell me what a cordwainer is ?

I have found a stray Ireland marrying in Ruardeen
occupation for groom is Cordwainer

I'm trying to work out if this John Ireland can belong to to my tree in anyway...havent heard of a Cordwainer anywhere else

I think that Cordwainer is more generic , as in one that works Leather. It was adopted mainly by Shoemakers, rather than Saddlers or glovemakers !

There is a further distinction between working with new leather - cordwainer and old leather - cobbler.

Thanks everyone, not sure where this Stray is from yet not sure he's mine as he's born in Ross.

married Lydia Blanch of Ruardeen I've tracked him by census from 1851-91vand as far as I can tell they have no children and in his later life it states he is paralized.
