Hello everyone,
I wonder if anyone knows of any ophanages that were in the Coleford area around the years 1891 to 1905. If so is there any way that I can get the records to try and find one of the boys under their care.
Many thanks for a wonderful site.
Valerie.

1911 census lookup - John SHAW
by steval , Monday, October 21, 2013, 05:22 (4127 days ago) @ slowhands
Hello everyone,
I have just received my Grandfather's discharge papers from the Merchant Navy 1908 (aged 15) and it states that his address was 5 Gloucester Road, Coleford. I was wondering if any kind person would be able to look at the 1911 census to see if he went back to Coleford at that time.
My Grandfather's name was John/Jack Shaw b. 1891 in London.
His guardian was Laura Robinson of 5 Gloucester Road, Coleford.
In 1914 he married and was a miner in Coleford.
Many thanks in anticipation.
Kind regards Valerie

I have looked on the 1911 census and the only John Shaw I can find that may fit is as follows:-
John Shaw age 18 single Railway Porter
born South America British subject by parentage
living at The Gorse, Coleford, Glos with Albert Wilce and family.
When looking up Coleford on the 1911 census it comes under Monmouthshire not Gloucestershire.
Hope this is of some help.

Looking at John SHAW's (age 23) marriage 6 December 1914 - at Coleford (residence, Newland Street, Coleford) - one witness was Emily HUDSON.
A Emily HUDSON - Servant age 19 - born Gloucestershire, is living at 10 Gloucester Road, Coleford on the 1911 census - working for Percy A JONES and his family.
The John SHAW on the 1911 census - single age 19 - born South America, British Parentage - and lodging with Albert WILCE, wife Agnes (who had been married 5 years).
Gloucestershirebdm

Out of curiosity I searched for John Shaw's earlier years in "South America" via LDS / Family Search website.
The site gives many Shaws, some born England, within the 1895 Argentina Census.
Could this be John ?, apparently born in the City(Ciudad) and Capital of Buenos Aires, the major port on the Atlantic coast famous for beef export.
"Argentina, National Census, 1895"
Name: Juan Shaw
Event Place: Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina
Age (Formatted in Original Language): 2 años
Birth Year (Estimated): 1893
Birth Province: Capital Federal
Birth Nation: Argentina
Gender (Original Language): Varón
Marital Status (Original Language):
GS Film number: 608435
Digital Folder Number: 004149084
To my pleasant surprise the original census image can be viewed f-o-c.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MWWZ-3G3
Listed next to Juan, so presumably his family?, are
Adelaida R. Shaw, birth: 1871 England
Tomas Shaw, birth: 1894 Buenos Aires, Argentina
In total sixty-six Shaws are listed in the Argentina Census of 1895; hopefully this link will show them all but note those at "Partido Azul, Buenos Aires, Argentina" are in fact in the city of Azul about 180 miles southwest of B.A. City itself, albeit still within B.A. Province - Argentina is an immense country, the capital BA being towards the northern end and on the border with Uruguay.)
https://familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=75&query=%2Bsurname%3Ashaw~%20...
There are five more Johns listed, as follows:
Could this be his father John Senior as per the marriage record) ?
Juan Shaw birth: 1845 England
Departamento Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina
(so also abt 180 miles from BA, to the north west.
From Wiki, "By 1880, Rosario had become the first export outlet of Argentina. By 1887 it had about 50,000 inhabitants, of which 40% were immigrants who brought new ideas from Europe...")
Also:
Juan Shaw birth: 1858 Capital Federal, Argentina
Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina
Juan Shaw birth: 1819 Great Britain
Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina
Juan Shaw birth: 1844 Buenos Aires, Argentina
Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina
Juan S. Shaw birth: 1875 Buenos Aires, Argentina
Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina
???
I would be very interested to know if I'm on the right track, I'm sure there were Shaws in other South American countries too.
John SHAW born South America c1893
by MPGriffiths , Tuesday, October 22, 2013, 10:14 (4126 days ago) @ Jefff
John SHAW's guardian was Laura ROBINSON.
It may be coincidence - but on the census link - above Adelaide SHAW is Emilia ROBINSON - M - 45 - A que Nacion Porteneco - - Inglesa (?) (and Adelaide has id in the same column, status: Casada - married
Name: Emilia ROBINSON
Event Place: Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina
Age: 45 anos
Birth Year: 1850
Birth Nation: Inglaterra
Gender : Mujer
Marital Status: Viuda (Widow)

Other ROBINSON's in the same area....
Do the other Headings - gives dates i.e. how long they have been in the Country?

Hi M, hope you enjoyed a good holiday.
Well spotted re the Robinson "link", not sure whether the lines & numbers 20,21 etc too left show she's in the same household, perhaps ?
Re the other headings, I guess you mean those numbers to the far right, shame the headings are hard to read (not that I speak Spanish!).
This scan of another probably unrelated Robinson on another Census form shows the headings (but not entries!) very clearly, I'll try and decipher them if I can find my son's old Eng/Spanish Dictionary.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12347-93413-97.jpg?cc=1410078&wc=11764757
PS Thankfully no need for the dictionary, having just found this usefull site it appears those far right numbers may mean "How many children an individual had (for women) and how many years a couple had been married", altho that would mean Emilia aged 45 had born 12 children, so ?

Hi
You could also try the George Muller orphanage at Bristol, which is where my Forest family were sent about 1911. They will advise if the child was resident and then provide you with a copy of their records for a fee.
Good Luck
