William Roberts. Shoemaker born abt 1800 (General)

by jimashton @, Monday, March 22, 2010, 16:26 (5439 days ago)

I am trying to establish the parents of William Roberts born abt. 1800. He married Elizabeth Parlor born 1801 Tinker, daughter of John Parlor Stone Mason 14 Aug 1825 Abenhall.

William Roberts is not currently related to me, but having 344 Roberts in my Family Tree, that could change.

Although I have many connections with this William Roberts descendants, my main interest is in his grandaughter Evangeline Amanda Roberts born 23 March 1867, daughter of Henry Roberts (one of William Roberts 9 children) and Ann Hall. Evangeline Amanda Roberts became the second wife of Lewis (Louis) Marfell, the subject of thread http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=22925.

Census data for William Roberts 1800 :

1841 Census Joys Green
WLM ROBERTS abt 1801 Shoe Maker Glos England Dean Forest
ELIZABETH ROBERTS abt 1803
ANN ROBERTS abt 1828
WLM ROBERTS abt 1830
HENRY ROBERTS abt 1832
ROWLAND ROBERTS abt 1838
ALLIN ROBERTS abt 1840

1851 Census
ROBERTS William 53 Cordwainer East Dean
Elizabeth 50 Tinker East Dean
William 22 Cordwainer East Dean
Henry 20 Cobler East Dean
Rowland 13 Coal Miner Labourer East Dean
Allen 11 East Dean
Ruth 9 East Dean
PARLOUR John Father in Law Widow/er 80 Stone Mason East Dean

1861 Census East Dean Rg 9 1755 41
William 63 Boot maker Lydbrook
Rowland 23 Coal Miner East Dean
Elizabeth 22 East Dean
Ruth 20 East Dean
Eliza Ann Meek Grandaughter 8 East Dean **

** William Roberts daughter Ann married Elijah Meek, who is related to me.

1871 Census East Dean 2598/95
William Roberts 74 Shoemaker Lydbrook
Elizabeth 71 Lydbrook
Ruth 24 East Dean
Allen 8 Grandson East Dean
Enoch 5 Grandson East Dean

There are a number of William Roberts baptised around 1800.

Any help would be appreciated.

Note for any early viewers of this thread. This has been amended to remove incorrect information about William Roberts 1800's son William Roberts 1829. This William Roberts 1829 (the correct one) actually married Charlotte Hussey 1829 and they had no children - too many William Roberts.

William Roberts. Shoemaker born abt 1800

by Danny @, Tuesday, March 23, 2010, 09:26 (5439 days ago) @ jimashton

Hello Jim
Some years ago I spent many months trying to establish if the parents of William Roberts, the shoemaker, were Moses Roberts/Mary Hayward or William Roberts/Mary Rudge.
Seven recordings of his age during his lifetime suggest the shoemakers DOB was 1798 + or - 1 year. That, together with accurate recording of wife and childrens' ages, leans towards William Roberts and Mary Rudge as the parents.
I tried to track all family members looking for links, as well prison records, witnesses at marriages, together with baptisms, burials etc etc. The close proximity of Lydbrook and Ruardean for the two families does not help, nor the many conflicting bits of data.
There was so much conflicting or incomplete data that making a solid decision was not possible and, although I think the parents were William Roberts and Mary Rudge, I have not continued this thread on my family tree

regards .....Danny

Thanks Danny

I wish his parents were Moses Roberts & Mary Hayward as Moses is a 2nd cousin 5 times removed of mine. They did have a son William baptised 24 Feb 1793, but I have him as married to Ann Barnard (this has been subject of previous discussion).

Interestingly I have this William Roberts 1793 occupations on various occassions as Cordwainer. Iron Miner. Haulier. Lime Burner. The cordwainer would fit very neatly for my William Roberts without parents.

William Roberts and Mary Rudge sounds a good bet, but alas nothing confirmatory.

Evangeline Roberts is my great grandmother. Is Elizabeth Parlor's name ever spelled Parler?

You have to be aware of all potential spellings this long ago, when a lot of people could not read or write, obviously they spoke their name to the vicar but they would not know whether he had spelt it correctly and his translation could be quite wrong. You will see from the reply from Slowhands that the name Parlow was used in 1797 and that for the 1851 Census entry in my original posting John Parlour was used by the enumerator.

Evangeline Amanda ROBERTS 1864 Joys Green

by LJM, Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 03:27 (5438 days ago) @ slowhands

Thank you. This has been very, very helpful. Also, I read in another thread that there was some confusion about Evelyn Morgan Gardner--the poster noted that she did not appear on the 1920 census. She does appear on the 1920 U.S. census for LaSalle, Ilinois, but she is listed as Evelyn Marfell 16, a servant in the household of Howard Doan, Jr. Louis and Evangeline Marfell are listed in that census as residing at Deer Park in LaSalle County.
