Benjamin Yeates of Monmouth (General)

by john hayward @, Thursday, June 10, 2010, 17:37 (5357 days ago)

Does anyone have any information relating to Benjamin Yeates of Monmouth? He was a draper in Monmouth and had a business in Church St. and his second marriage was to Ann Kidson of Longhope, Gloucester (my great great grandparents)He was elected to the local council, presumably at Shire Hall,by a fiddle and was ousted in 1824. He was also a freemason. His father was a cider merchant also called Benjamin and he married Sarah Tippins in 1787 at Monmouth. I am unable to get back further than this and I think the family may have moved into Monmouth perhaps from another county.

On Monmouthshire Marriages 1725-1812 - there is a John YEATS, who married an Alice JONES at Monmouth 9 October 1781.

Do you have a copy of Benjamin's marriage (for witnesses etc)?

Thank you very much for your reply.I have got back as far as Benjamin Yeats cider merchant who married Sarah Tippins in 1787 at Monmouth. This Benjamin also had a brother Richard and there is a parallel line with his descendants.
They had an uncle Benjamin Yeats who was a timber merchant in Monmouth and he was married three times. However I am unable to trace their date of birth or origins and therefore I am stuck. I was hoping that perhaps someone may have cracked this one as they do seem to be a well off family for the time. Unfortunatly John Yeats could very well be related but I am unable to establish a link.

I have wondered if my Monmouth THOMAS YEATES line and your BENJAMIN YEATES line connect.

Have looked and puzzled!

Have yet to understand the various connections. It is interesting to note that Benjamin seems to go though lines other than your own.

Benjamin Yeates m Harriet Farmer or Farrer @ Dixton Newton 24th Oct 1802
There was a Benjamin Yeates 7 Nov 1779 Staunton by Monmouth s/o Richard & Jane
George Yeates b. Staunton 1829 ish

There does seem to be a connection to Newland /Staunton/Dixton Newton and Monmouth in my Yeates/Yates line.

My Thomas Yeates was b. approx. 1800. (1861 has b. Monmouth. )
Have a possible candidate For Thos.Yeatesat Staunton:
Thomas Yeates 27 May 1799 father William
Henry Yeates 9 Jan 1803 s/o Wm & Mary
IGI has Emanuel Yeates 6 Feb 1803 Staunton Ben & Harriet
Ben m. Harriet Farrer at Dixton Newton 24 Oct 1802 as above. This Ben & Harriet at Monmouth.
Think Farrers had some sort of shoe business???? Although I cannot find the note that I made.
All these Yeates seem to be shoe makers or in that line. My gt gt grandmother Elizabeth nee Smith wife of Thomas had a 'wet fish' shop in Monmouth.

It is very difficult as Monmouth is on the border . Would be interested in your thoughts .

Hi Patsy,
Thank you for your recent reply re Benjamin Yeates.
The line that you refer to i.e.Benjamin Yeates married to Harriett FARRER, is descended from Richard Yeates-timber cutter, brother to Benjamin YEATES - cider merchant. Richard was born about 1749 and married Jane BEVAN in 1778 by Licence at Dixton.
Have you a connection with this line as they were shoemakers in Monmouth.I have Benjamin & Harriett as having a son called Benjamin born about 1800 and died in 1871, but no christening date as the info was, I believe, obtained from a monumental inscription, plus other family members
Could you let me have your email address as I have quite a lot of info that I am sure would interest you as well as my version of the family tree which is very simplistic. I have a likeness of Benjamin Yeates and his wife Ann Kidson which I believe was made in about 1827 when they were married, before photography was invented. Also a silhoutte of Sarah Kidson his first wife who died age 29 in 1822 probably in childbirth as she had a stillborn child according to the family bible.
They had a daughter Ann Tippins Yeates who is my gt gt grandmother. Her sister Sarah Tippins Yeates married George Williams and they emigrated to Canada in 1857 and a few years ago I was able to contact her descendants who now live in California, USA.
I also have a copy of his business card and a letterhead showing that he supplied material from his shop to Monmouth council about 1828.
Are you from Monmouth? I live in Newport and would very like to find out the whereabouts of his shop in Church St. My gt grandfather, William Henry Greene, who was a journalist and married Ann Tippins Yeates in 1857 at Monmouth, recounts a grisly story of what happened there years ago when it was called Butchers Row.
Incidentally, John Speeds map of Monmouthshire shows a layout of Monmouth in 1610 and Butcher's Row is shown there in what is now called Church St. Copies of John Speeds county maps of 1610 in beautiful colour and illustration can be obtained on the internet for about £15 inc postage. I have 6 of them which reflect where my ancestors came from.

My email address is eregen1@aol.com and it would be much easier for me to email direct to you stuff that I am sure you would find of interest.

John Hayward
