Stephen BRYANT (General)

by Bra1thwell, Thursday, July 15, 2010, 19:53 (5250 days ago)

Stephen Bryant is my Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandfather (I think that's the right amount of Greats!), he was born around 1799 (Littledean) plied his trade as a Cordwainer (Shoemaker) and married twice (Sarah Hill around 1818) and Sarah Ruck later. I can trace the Bryant side of my family back to Stephen (his father was almost certainly Samuel Bryant), but then it all gets a bit vague. Any pointers going further back in time for both ancestors of the Bryants and/or Hills would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Ian

Blimey...thanks for the speedy help guys, much appreciated!

Could "m p griffiths" please help me to understand what the record is that has been posted (is it a child's baptism?). If so, what is the significance of, what appears to be, 3 children being listed in total?

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick!

Apologies - altered my message as requested (we've just been away with 3 small grandchildren, so brain dead at the moment...)

Welcome to our complicated family Ian

I am a great grandaughter of Stephen Bryant b 1799/1802.

I have been trying to find out when and where Stephen and his two wives died.
When my grandparents Alice and Arthur Bryant married in 1885 Arthur stated his father Stephen was deceased.
My research has so far come up with a possible birth in Westerleigh in about 1802,
if this is correct he can be found in the 1881 census age 79 living at 30, Upper Cheltenham Place Bristol, wih a grandson Stephen Edwin Bryant and family, and a possible death in Bath in 1883.
I am sure Slowhands will correct me if I have completely lost the plot.

Regards,
MJL

The research I have done definitely points to Stephen Bryant passing away 1874 (Westbury) as per Slowhands note. I am pretty certain because of tracking each Census (1841/51/61/71) and Stephen's co-inhabitants plus the consistent references back to his age/birthplace/vocation (he was a Cordwainer). So I think you have solved that bit of your puzzle.

Thank you both for putting me on the right track.
Is there a reason why Stephen's death is not in the Parish Records?

A number of possibilities -

Perhaps he had become "non conformist" by then, perhaps he was buried back in Yate ?

I'm sure there are others :-)

Note Sarah Bryant is not in the FoD burial transcripts having died in 1871 WoS

Another possibility for the death of his second wife . Her first child,Maria died in New Zealand and I am aware that later family moved to Canada. She may have emigrated with one of them.

Does anyone else think it odd that when Stephen married his first wife he 'signed' and at his second marriage he 'marked'
