JONES (DAVIS) and THOMAS Clearwell Fence

by Jenny B, Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 08:17 (5246 days ago) @ slowhands

Thank you Slowhands for your response.
I had located this 1851 census record - however I have spent hours and hours searching for this family in 1861 without success.
Can find William and Eliza JONES again in 1871.
In 1881 census Eliza is aged 70, a widow, and is recorded with her granddaughter (CRUM). I am in no doubt it is the same Eliza - but for some unknown reason she records herself as Eliza BALDWIN.
Eliza had a granddaughter born in 1887 who was registered as Elizabeth Baldwin JONES. By 1911 at least three of Eliza's grandsons (one of them my husband's grandfather) are also using the name BALDWIN. The other 6 siblings continued to use the name JONES.
I can find no link at all to BALDWIN. Family story was that there were too many JONES' so some of them changed to BALDWIN.
With thanks.
Jenny

Eliza JONES 1821 -1894 St Briavels & Clearwell Fence

by Jenny B, Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 09:58 (5246 days ago) @ slowhands

Slowhands - thank you for pointing out my careless error stating that in 1881 Eliza was recorded as aged 70, a widow under the name Eliza BALDWIN. You are correct - the year was 1891.

The 1881 record you had is the same as I identified for Eliza also - with her son George JONES.

The 1891 census on Ancestry actually records Eliza's granddaughter as Elizabeth ANNA in the Index - but if you look at the actual image you will see it is CRUM. FindmyPast has the name correctly transcribed as CRUM in the index.

I initially thought Eliza's 1891 record was perhaps just an error on the enumerators part and mistakenly recorded BALDWIN instead of JONES. However it is too much of a coincidence that 4 years prior Eliza's granddaughter was registered and baptised Elizabeth Baldwin JONES and that by the 1911 census at least three of Eliza's grandsons were going by the name BALDWIN while siblings remained JONES.

Again Slowhands you have identified the same burial record for Eliza as I did - and back under her married name of JONES.

Would love to find this family in 1861 to see if Elizabeth JONES born 1844 was still there. I have no leads on Elizabeth. I have searched at length on both Ancestry and FindmyPast without success.

With thanks.
Jenny

Elizabeth JONES 1844 Clearwell

by Jenny B, Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 10:13 (5246 days ago) @ slowhands

Yes that is who I believe was a sister to Harriet JONES (1847) married CRUM and George Thomas JONES 1852 (married Jane JAMES - my husbands great grandparents).
There were also at least 5 other siblings who died as infants.
I have no further leads on Elizabeth JONES born/baptised 1844.
Regards
Jenny
