Hello, new to this site and this is my first post!!! Researching my family name of Morse who i believe originated in the Forest of Dean, unless told different, on the census of 1901 James T Morse (44) and wife Ellen Morse (38) had 12 children being George,Frederick,Thomas,Ernest,Harry,James,John,Elizabeth,Amelia,Florence,Ellen and Martha.
My Grandfather would have been John Morse born approx 1900 and died approx 1957, my father is Peter George Morse.
I am led to beleive James T Morse resided in Chedworth, any one out ther who may be connected get in touch or fill in the gaps....
Regards
David John Morse

Up North where? Our connection is to the Herberts and Phelps and many others who moved "Up North", in our case Yorkshire. We have connections to many of the Forest families. Willing to share information if required. Regards Jean Herbert

FreeBDM - have a marriage Northleach District (which covers Chedworth) - Dec 1851 (1 November 1851 - Chedworth - CLDS)

John MORSE & Elizabeth MOSS - this certificate, would give you the name of John's father.

Chedworth St Andrew Marriages 1837-1851 are on the 'net' but stops in March 1851

http://members.shaw.ca/panthers1/ChedworthStAndrewsMarr.html

but there is a marriage of a Cornelius KEEN to a Mary Ann MORSE, father John MORSE, labourer, in 1848. No MORSE in Chedworth 1851 census.

1851 Census, Chedworth

William KEEN - 66 labourer, born Wilts, Wanborough
Mary Ann KEEN - 60 - born Glos. Easington
Cornalus KEEN - 20 - born Chedworth
Maria KEEN - 32 - born Chedworth

Think this is Elizabeth

1851 Census, Chedworth

Thos MOFS - 56 - born Dowswenn (Downsend?)
Sarah - - 50 born Glos. Withington
Elizabeth - 21 - born Deerhurst, very near to Tewkesbury
William - 18 - born Chedworth

1841 Census, Chedworth

MOSS

Thomas 40, Sarah 40, Charles 15, Martha 13, Ann 11, Elizabeth 9, William 7

John MORSE - Wotton Under Edge

by m p griffiths @, Wednesday, July 21, 2010, 22:23 (5244 days ago) @ m p griffiths

there is just one MORSE baptism at Wootton Under Edge

John MORSE - 10 April 1831, father John (clothworker) and Elizabeth

and one MORSE marriage at WUE (on FOD Misc Records)

John MORSE married Elizabeth EDWARDS - at WUE - 19 April 1830

poss?

Elizabeth EDWARDS - christened WUE - 24 May 1807 - Geo & Lattitia

George EDWARDS - married WUE Lattitia LACEY - 11 May 1806

Wotton Under Edge is not too many miles from the Wiltshire border. 9 other people on 1851 census, say they were born in Wiltshire, WUE, 5 people in 1861 - 18 people in 1871. Therefore your John MORSE could be the WUE birth in 1831.

Hi
I am descended from James Thomas Morse of Chedworth and his wife Ellen Day also of Chedworth.
As far as I know there is no link to Morse in the Forest of Dean. James' father John and his father Timothy came from Brokenborough.
I do have a lot of info on this family if you find a connection.
Pam

Hi again, 2nd message
Re: Morse family in Chedworth. There were 17 children all told. One died young.
I have not yet traced John Morse, born 1900, the son of James Thomas Morse and Ellen Day, so maybe he moved to Forest of Dean. He was living 1928 as he is listed as being present at the funeral of his brother James.
J T Morse (1856 - 1936) was the son of John Morse/Moss of Chedworth (1827 - 1903)and Elizabeth Moss (of Tewkesbury).
Father of J T Morse was Timothy Moss and Hester Cole. Timothy was born West Littleton, Wilts 1792 and died Chedworth 1853.
Hope this helps.
