I am looking for information on James Adams born in either Berry Hill or Coleford in 1845.
He raised his family in Newland near Redbrook, appearing in the 1881 & 1891 census' as a Brewer.
His Wife was Harriet Morgan originally from Trelleck, Monmouthshire.
There children were William James(1873) Emily Mary(1875) Edith Annie Alice(1876 my g grandma) Florence(1879) Sarah Ellen (1883) and finally John Labon (1885).
Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.
Regards
Mike

Thanks for your input, much appreciated.
I have the 1851 Census which shows that John & Margaret were living in West Dean & all of their children were born there.
On James Adams census' for 1871, 1881 & 1891 it states he was born in either Berry hill or Coleford.
I'm still a little confused as on your baptism details it states James was baptised at Christ church, Berry Hill & his father was a collier.
On the 1851 census it mentions that the family were in Christchurch parish at West Dean.
Does Christchurch parish cover both Berry Hil & West Dean?
Or are there 2 parishes with the same name within a dozen miles of each other?
Regards
Mike

Registration District: Monmouth, Sub Reg. - Coleford
The heading at the top of the census page says - Ecclesiastical District Christchurch - perhaps another forum member can answer your question.
The Enumerator notes say
All that part of the Township of West Dean comprising the Porch and Buckholt Inclosures, Cannop Chemical Works, Vallets Level the North side of the Turnpike Road from Coleford to Little Dean, Coleford Lane End, Five Acres, New Thatch or Independent Pit.
John ADAMS is next door - but one - to - Ricd B MESENGER, (listed on Ancestry as Ricd B MAINGER - Registrar of Births & Deaths and Relieving Office (so probably a surname on your James' birth certificate) - his wife Marieanne - age 45, born West Dean and Hannah WORGAN? - aunt and 77 also born West Dean.
Richard Benwell MESSENGER (Jnr & Snr) + Mary Ann MESSENGER - records on FOD -
Christchurch
just for interest.....
1841 Census, Dean Forest, Ross
BERRY HILL
Richard MESSENGER - 40, Schoolmaster - not born in count
Mary Ann MESSENGER - 36
Richard MESSENGER - 3
Mary WINTAL - 70 - SK
Hannah WORGAN - 60
West Dean - Christchurch etc

The "areas" overlap rather than being exclusive/unique:-
Its Gloucestershire for County
Its West Dean for the census / admin. district (district 5h to be precise)
Its Christchurch for the Parish
Its physically in the Five Acres / Berry Hill area
confusing eh ?
