Howell family at Littledean c. 1810 (General)

by Exomites, Tuesday, July 27, 2010, 17:23 (5238 days ago)

I had always thought my Howell ancestors were Lancashire/Manchester based, but I find they moved from Littledean sometime between 1841 and 1851. I have located EDWIN HOWELL, born about 1807, a shoemaker, possibly living Broad Street, Littledean, married to Esther, and buried in Littledean 5.12.1841. He had a son Joseph who married Eliza Jackson, and took the family to Manchester. He worked with iron making.
Have used only census records so far, and searched on this site. I would like to know if there be any supportive evidence about the shoemaker, and extra detail, and if this Howell branch was based in Littledean with records further back to his parents.
Thank you,
John Powell (York)

Ester BRAIN 1813 Stonehouse / Eastington ?

by jimashton @, Thursday, July 29, 2010, 17:52 (5236 days ago) @ slowhands

Having followed this complicated tale, I was wondering why I had Samuel Colwell & Esther Brain in my Family Tree and of course in my case it leads to the Marfell family.

Samuel Colwell & Esther Brain had a daughter Harriett 1855 - who you will note was a witness at the marriage between Charles Richards & Jane Davis. Harriett Colwell 1855 married Frederick Charles Jefferies 1856 son of William Jefferies 1812 & Elizabeth. They also had a daughter Edith Jefferies 1842 who married twice, the first Henry Eaton, the second John Morton Marfell 1828, this was a 3rd marriage for him, the others Emma Green & Elizabeth Anne Wilce. I have the certificates for all 3 marriages.

The thread that has evolved is very complex, but do I gather Esther Brain also married Edwin Howell who died in 1841 and who was the Baker she married noting that she was shown as Widow surname Baker at her marriage to Charles Richards - did she have time to marry someone else ?

Ester BRAIN 1813 Stonehouse / Eastington ?

by seallen3 @, Saturday, December 18, 2010, 14:11 (5094 days ago) @ m p griffiths

Hester(Ester/Esther) Brain (Bryan/Bryant) was my great great grandmother. I sent for the certificate OND 1841 for a marriage with William Baker but was told that though they were on the same page, they did not marry each other.

I found a marriage at Eastington Parish Church on 25th January 1830 of an Esther Bryant OTP to a William Baker of King's Stanley. This fits in with the fact that she is a widow by the name of Baker when she marries Charles Richards in 1843.

I don't know if she was the Esther living with Edwin Howell at Little Dean in the 1841 census. I can't find a record of a marriage. Maybe they didn't marry which is why she gives her name as Baker later on. All very baffling with a lot more work to be done to unravel it.

Many thanks. Elizabeth was the name of Hester's mother, as you will know. Did Elizabeth Hester survive? And what happened to William? I don't have access to the parish records for the Stonehouse/Eastington area.

I have photos of Esther's daughters by Samuel Colwell- Harriet and Janetta.

Sarah Ann HOWELL Littledean c. 1840

by seallen3 @, Friday, December 31, 2010, 15:00 (5081 days ago) @ slowhands

Well spotted, Slowhands! I sent for Sarah's birth certificate and her mother's name is given as Hester Howell, formerly Brain. She had 3 husbands that I already knew of - William Baker 1830, Charles Richards 1843 and Samuel Colwell 1853 with children by each of them. As Jim Ashton pointed out, when she married Charles Richards, she gave her former name as Baker so there was no clue to another liaison. I can't find a record of a marriage to Edwin Howell, nor indeed, a convincing record of the death of her first husband, William Baker. So there are still unanswered questions about her status!

Many thanks for this surprising discovery.

Many many thanks for 3 prompt responses. From the 2 census records I found, and the info. with the wives' names I believe the Littledean link is with Edwin Howell, b. 1807, died 1841, His eldest son was Joseph, born c.1829 who married Eliza Jackson - don't know where -and he must have moved to Manchester after 1841, in his teens after his father died, as in 1851 he records the birth of my g-grandfather, also Joseph. Any records of this Edwin Howell, his birth, parents, &c.?
Thanks again for all this material to work on.

This is why I suspect your line is the Kings Stanley Joseph not the Littledean Joseph

Name: Eliza Jackson
Name: Joseph Howell
Year of Registration: 1851
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Chorlton
County: Lancashire

However it is possible Edwin Howell is from Kings Stanley area, as his wife Ester appears to be from Eastington / Stonehouse.

Thank you, and others for all the help here. I have picked up new family members, didn't know, and new locations. It does look as if my g-grandfather(joseph)'s father was the Joseph b. 1829, as there is a brother Thomas which lnk in, and is the Joseph from Littledean. Obviously not 100% certain, but looks very close. Any information further back than the Thomas and Prudence married in 1784? Can I presume this marriage also in Littledean?
However it goes, me great thanks for all this help.
