by Thomas Ian Wagstaff, Tuesday, August 03, 2010, 14:05 (5231 days ago)
Hello All,
I'm not used to this format of communication so I hope I'll get through.James Howell was my G.G.Grandfather who I think I've traced to the 1841 census living with a family named Jordan, the head being Thomas, also in the household is Deborah Howell who I assume is his mother. The address was M/B?---- Forge,Lydney.I have his marriage cert.on which his father is recorded as William Howell, but I've had no success locating his birth cert. at the G.R.O.Is there any local knowledge as to the Forge address or any advice as to where/how I may be able get further information.
Many Thanks,
Ian Wagstaff.

Ian,
I was beaten to it in suggesting Middle Forge. The Forge area was a series of cottages used by workers from Lydney Tin Works and is on the Whitecroft road out of Lydney. It crops up a lot in my family tree. In fact I do have one of my Cook's marry a Howell and the name William and James Howell features in their family as well. I used to argue as a 'young un' that the Foresters weren't all related to each other but I am starting to think otherwise.
Can I suggest one radical way of finding out more. This excellent website has a very excellent search engine of parish records. I approached this one day with my Cook family and downloaded every Cook record in and around Lydney to Alvington. I copied these onto Microsoft One Note as a piece of research software (I suspect there are others around) and gradually matched up all the B, M and D records. I then put the non related ones into a separate folder awaiting any change. I thought I might get a 30% return but ended up 'owning' about 80% of the ones I found. As a result my tree suddenly got a lot of extra branches.

In my screenshots, you can see where I've replaced the text previously rendered by as a Flash movie via sIFR with plain, cheap ghd normal text rendered using the same font via @font-face. The headers are basically identical (although I will concede that Flash does a slightly better job with the anti-aliasing than the Windows XP operating system).
discount ghd hair straightener Since the text as rendered by @font-face is just like any other bit of HTML text, it is accessible, selectable, re-sizable and requires no extra technologies (e.g. Flash or JavaScript) to be displayed.buy ghd hair straightener

I would be interested in any information you have on James Howell who was born in 1841 in Lydney. Deborah Howell his mother is a distant cousin of mine. His grandmother Mary Howell Jordan is my 4th great-aunt. I would like a copy of his marriage certificate, to see if any of the witnesses are in my database. Looking forward to hearing from you.
