Timothy Cooper St.Whites Flaxley. Help (General)
by beav2012 , Adelaide, South Australia, Monday, August 23, 2010, 04:25 (5212 days ago)
I am trying to find more informtion on the will of Timothy Cooper 1814-1884. All I have found so far is a Probate and it states:
Cooper Timothy.
Personal Estate £431 16s 6d.
30 September. The Will of Timothy Cooper late of St.White's Flaxley in the County of Gloucester Farmer who died 31 January 1884 at St. White's was proved at Gloucester by George Frederick Church of Cinderford in the said County Butcher and Joseph Hague of Monk Hill Flaxley Farmer the Executors.
If his personal estate was worth so much why (and I may have this wrong) have I found his widow Eliza Cooper (was Turner)in the 1891 census working as a housekeeper at 157 Bedford Street, Liverpool.

Eliza Cooper abt 1849 Deerhurst, Gloucestershire, England Housekeeper Liverpool, Lancashire
Eliza had been married to Timothy for 5 or 6 years.
What about any children of Timothy's marriage to Ann ( or were they childless ?) - is this where the bulk of the money / estate went ?
In 1880, £431 16s 0d would have the same spending worth of today's £20,860.26 { approx US$30,000 or AUS$ 35,000 }
1904 St. White's farm, which comprised 101 a., came into the possession of Thomas Harrison Burdess by his purchase of the moieties held by F. M. Lloyd and Eleanor Phillips. Eleanor's moiety derived from Elizabeth Bradley and in 1865 had been vested in, as trustee for sale under Elizabeth's will, her husband Thomas Adams Phillips (d. c. 1892), (fn. 24) the owner by 1870 of Mousell farm (44 a.). (fn. 25) T. H. Burdess died in 1915 and after his wife Hannah surrendered St. White's farm in 1954 Sir Launcelot Crawley-Boevey sold the freehold to the tenant farmer, Jesse Virgo. (fn. 26) The farmhouse, on the site of the medieval grange, (fn. 27) dated from a rebuilding in the 19th century. In the mid 20th century it was occupied by the Cinderford golf club (fn. 28) and in the later 1980s it contained several dwellings.

Mousell Farm was also known as Mousell Barn farm.
Today its roughly the land to the east of Doubleview Cinderford, coming down the hillside towards Littledean

Hi Slowhands
I cannot find any children for Timothy from either of his marriages. His first marriage was to Ann Pritchard in 1841, she died in 1876 and Timothy married Eliza two years later. From the Parish records he was at least 30yrs older than Eliza so maybe he was hoping for children but for one reason or another it never happened.

Ok so now I have another query arising from Timothy's will and that is, he has Mary Ann Cooper, wife of Walter Harry but I have her sister Emma Yates Cooper as Walter's wife. They married on the 3rd May 1874. I also have Walter in the 1871 census, lodging with Emma and her Mother Ann. He is a widow and has a daughter Ada Mary Harry. So my question is who did Mary Ann Cooper marry? Sorry I should add that Mary was born c1842 in Bilson Green and the last residence I have for her is in 1861 Breconshire, Wales. occupation: servant. Working for Thomas and Alice Rogers (not sure if they were her Mother's parents/family).

Thank you for that. I do have all the census and marriage (but not baptism) records for this family, except for Mary Ann.I cannot find her after 1861. I have her parents as John Cooper c1815-1863 and Ann Rogers c1816-1900. John and Ann married on the 12th May 1836 (information sourced from the parish records). His brother Timothy was a witness as was his future wife Ann Pritchard. John and Ann's children were: Walter J Cooper 1839-1914. Mary Ann 1842. Oliver T. 1844-1866. Emma Y. 1847-1887 and George Samson Cooper 1850-1914.
