Bible Christian Chapel Ruspidge (General)

by Todd07064 @, New Jersey, USA, Thursday, August 26, 2010, 21:30 (5208 days ago)

I have recently learned that my great-grandmother and most of her siblings were baptised in the Bible Christian Chapel Ruspidge before emmigrating to the United States in 1893. Is this chapel still standing? Is a photo available of this chapel? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Todd

Thank you for the info. Upon reading the document and comparing the maps from both it and an aerial photo I have narrowed the chapel down to one of four buildings. Unfortunately google maps street view does not extend to that area (Ruspidge Road and Tramway Road). Therfore I'm still interested in a finding a photo of the chapel. Thanks again.

Hi Todd

Sorry I do not have a photo of the building but I can tell you where it is on Google maps.

The co-ordinates are 51 48 08 81N and 2 30 31 88W

It's been a long time since I was there but I hope this helps.

Dave

May be Gloucestershire Council could help - the website does mention photographs of Ruspidge

Originally built in 1857 the Bible Christian Chapel was one of the many small chapels built in the Forest. For a while it housed a mixture of fashion clothes and artworks and received its present name plate of 'Rainforest Chapel.'

Thanks for the photo! Definately a small chapel, if fact I wouldn't even have suspected it as a chapel. Nice to see someplace that your ancestors walked in order to give a small impression of what their lives may have been like.

This is very typical of a non-conformist chapel and many were of this size. It might, however be bigger than you think.

Very similar design and size of building to the Zion Chapel at Soudley. Many people of my wider family were members there into the 20th Century.

I once wrote a little article on the 'Bible Christians' in the Forest Footsteps No. 29 of Autumn 1997 (oddly enough page 29) based on a centenary article in the Lydney Observer 11th June 1915.
