Thank you both very much, it’s given me another round of headaches.
The only other Mary Preece with a father Richard, that I can find a marriage for, married Alfred Henry Hodges in 1879 at Monmouth. I’ve found them on the 1881 census in Monmouth, Alfred aged 27, Mary aged 31 and Alfred jnr aged 6 months. Alfred is a carriage builder, so I know I’ve got the right couple.
The Elizabeth Preest, that married Richard Skinner in 1834, was the daughter of John Preest and Elizabeth (nee Morgan). So the witnesses are her brother John (her father had died in 1820) and I think Richard Morgan must have been related to her mother. I haven’t actually ventured into the Morgan family.
Back to Richard Preest and Anne (nee Beach). Anne’s burial shows that she lived at Clearwell at that time, which isn’t far from Coleford. So I think it is a distinct possibility.
By the way Richard was also the son of John Preest and Elizabeth (nee Morgan).

Would it be possible to have PREECE included in the soundex for PREEST? It would make life a lot easier for us Preests.
