Albert Smith (b 1868 aprox) married Rhoda Minnie Goode 1888 (General)

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Sunday, September 05, 2010, 15:45 (5198 days ago)

Unhappily everything I thought I knew about Albert Smith with the exception of his marriage to Rhoda Minnie Goode in 1888, the birth of their daughter Olive Elizabeth Smith in 1888 and his death in Runcorn Cheshire in 1891 are now proving to be incorrect.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to begin again:

I'm pretty sure that this belongs to another Albert Smith

and the only things I now know for sure are his fathers name as shown on his marriage cert:

This would mean that Elizabeth Page Hughes is not his mother, nor is he related to Eliza Jennings more than likely.

Any thoughts on all this would be most welcome and I'll happily flick over a gedcom file with the details of what I thought and what I can now verify if anyone has the time or interest to look it over.

Hi

I thought that everything to do with Alberts parents was gone but then I remembered that in my Great Grandmaothers funeral notice which she wrote (she had slow acting overian cancer) she lists her parents as:

James Smith, Elizabeth Hughes (who were in fact her grandparents). It also places her birth at Ruffell (actually Ruffet) Little Dean Glos Eng.

What shook me is that I've been contacted by a very nice person in NZ who thought that we might be related. As it turns out one of us, both of us or neither of are wrong but our research doesn't marry.

Where it does take me is to the birh of Albert whom I (in spite of now posessing 3 birth certificates for him which are all wrong) have never reconciled into the family of James and Elizabeth properly;

The 1871 and 1881 census's I was working from may refer to another family:

1871 census

James Smith 39
Elizabeth Smith 44
Thomas Smith 17
James Smith 15
Alice Smith 13
John Smith 11
Sarah Ann Smith 9
Elizabeth Smith 7
Enock Smith 5
Abbert Smith 3 (I'd say this is Albert with a trasncription error)

1881 census

Name: Albert Smith
Age: 13
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1868
Relation: Son
Father's Name: James
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Gender: Male
Where born: Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England
Civil parish: Mitcheldean
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Country: England
Street Address: Townend Street
Education:
Employment status:

View image
Occupation: ((Iron Miner)) Scholar

Registration district: Westbury On Severn
Sub-registration district: Newnham
ED, institution, or vessel: 30
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
James Smith 49
Elizabeth Smith 53
Albert Smith 13
Sydney Smith 9

She seems to have had Sydney and Albert quite late but there is a consistent spacing in the ages.

The research sent to me is following James and Elizabeth Smith (nee Mills, born in Stroud. I suspect that perhaps I have a cross over into their lives or my friend in NZ has a cross over into the lives of my Smiths (its at this point I despair the common names). "This particular James Smith was an iron miner born in Mitcheldean in 1831, son of Matthew Smith, born in High Wycombe in 1806".

Claire has also written this which really threw me as this is the cross over of our research:

"My line starts with Matthew (b.1805 in Buckinghamshire, son of Richard Smith, papermaker) and Eliza (nee Barnard) Smith - lived at Abenhall (v. close to Mitcheldean) Son James Smith b. 1831 Mitcheldean (10 siblings) Married Elizabeth Mills from Stroud in 1828.

Children:
Thomas, James, Alice, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Enoch, Albert (b. 1866), Sydney (all appear in census records)
The family lived in Townsend St Mitcheldean.
The men were mostly iron miners.

I have a record from the church register from Mitcheldean (on FOD website) that has Albert marrying Rhoda Minnie Goode on July 18 1888, father of groom James Smith miner, and an Elizabeth Smith as witness."

What it means is that we are in trouble with our research and your keen mind and insight would be very welcome (gripped by despair as I am of the thought that all these years work are wrong :-).

Writing it out has helped a little though as the clincher is that the funeral notice of my great Grandmother lists James and Elizabeth. I'd better scan that and send it to claire to see what she makes of it.

Kind regards

Lawrence

I hope to have some time tomorrow to revisit this "puzzle"

, son of Matthew Smith, born in High Wycombe in 1806 does seem to fit with my earlier suggestion.

Year: 1868

Well the only possible mis-fit is the marriage record below, or rather the brides surname and HUGHES would be a possible for a transcription error. Not sure wheer Elizabeth MILLS comes into this unless the first Elizabeth dies and he re-marries Elizabeth MILLS between 1861 and 1871 ( when the Stroud birth place appears) ??

Hi

The Goode side seems to be correct, its only the Smith side where I suspect I've combined two families with a James and Elizabeth Smith in them. Both from Abinhall or Mitcheldean.

I may have found a possible solution to identify which records are correct. I've ordered the birth cert for Sydney Smith, fingers crossed it lists his mothers maiden name.

I'll post when I have it in hand.

Hi

From the evidence of the birth certificate of Sydney Smith I know that

1881 Townsend St
James Smith abt 1832 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Head Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire
Elizabeth Smith abt 1828 Stroud, Gloucestershire, England Wife Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire
Albert Smith abt 1868 Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England Son Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire
Sydney Smith abt 1872 Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England Son Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire

relates to the Elizabeth Smith nee Mills. So can happily rule them out. Weird coincidence that they have an Albert but they are very common names. At least thats what my evidence suggests.

Albert Smith (b 1868 aprox) figured it out at last

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Tuesday, September 21, 2010, 16:33 (5182 days ago) @ Lawrencef

I've figured it out. Still don't have Alberts birth certificate but the gist of the census information gives it some sense. I suspect that the baptism I have for Albert Smith is possibly correct anyway as the Elizabeth Smith (nee Mills) Albert Smith is born 24 jan 1868 (I accidentally ordered his birth certificate while attempting to get my Alberts certificate). My Albert Smith is baptised 1st April 1868; without the mothers maiden name its not going to be possible to prove either way other than to say that the Mills Albert is clearly indicated on the birth certificate.

I had the information there I just hadn't made the connections.

James Smith b.1811 marries Eliza Jennings b.1808, he dies before 1846 and she remarries Anthony Hyde b.1820 d 1878

Eliza Jennings had a son James Smith and daughter Ellen Smith to James Smith. She has George and Sarah Hyde b.1849 to Anthony Hyde. It also gets especially confusing as both families have two James Smiths, and the siblings share first names between both families.

I'd confused the census information due to the merging of the Smith Hyde families. Silly of me as there is other information which links my Smiths back to the Hydes later on (such as the birth cert for Eliza Hyde which my Great grandmother used as her own identity to get a pension in Canada). My friend in NZ who thought we were related includeded my Alberts details in her research as well. Easily done given the similarities in names and such and the lack of definitive birth certs for my Albert. We've been merging the two Smith families hence the confusion. The savings grace is that the other Elizabeth Smiths' maiden name is Mills and it can be seen clearly that Sydney and the other Albert are hers as boh have birth certificates.

I'll now build the details up but that's the case as far as I can see. Some gaps to fill but the solutions in front of me now.

Hi

I've finally found the solution to the Rhoda Minnie Goode saga and in my excitement I really have to tell everyone.

Name: Minnie Goode
Year of Registration: 1869
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Westbury On Severn
County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 6a
Page: 222

Deaths Dec 1891 (>99%)
SMITH Rhoda 22 Runcorn 8a 155

She went to Runcorn to be at the deathbed of her husband Albert and the typhoid also took her. Terribly sad story. I will post more when the death certificate arrives... It does explain why my Great Grandmothers pragmatism to some degree however and also why she never told my Grandmother about her parents... She didn't know them...
