I have just registered with this site - it's brilliant. I am a direct ancestor of Matthew Hook, born 1749. My grandmother was Sarah Ellen Hook, daughter of Walter Hook and Sarah Heath. Walter was the son of Matthew Hook, born 1815 and Eliza Hodgkins. Matthew was the son of Richard Hook, born 1781 and Esther Pickering and Richard was the son of Matthew Hook, born 1749 and Mary Higgins, nee Taylor. As Matthew was the brother of Richard Hook of Lydney, 1757-1820, who married Hannah Wade, and we know he was the son of Thomas and Mary, I've come to the conclusion Matthew was baptised, or at least appeared in the Taynton parish registers as Thomas, 2 earlier Thomases having died. Thomas Hook married Mary Ratherstone, which I think can be also Rastone, May 22 1743 in Taynton. Thomas is probably either the son of William and Elenor Poydrass/Poythres or of John and Mary (no further info. yet). I'm going by dates and ages in the parish records on this site.
