Does anyone know the difference between the Chepstow Union and Union Lodg?. My grandfather is listed as being born in Union Lodge, Mounton Road, Chepstow. Is this the same as the Union?

Thanks for your reply. I know the details of my grandfather's family, but could find no record of them entering or leaving the Union. I am puzzled by this and wondered if Union Lodge was separate from the workhouse (Union). Can you help?

Yes its most likely a separate building to the Full Union Workhouse, at the edge of the site.

Thanks, but is it part of the workhouse? I understood that the sexes were separated on entering the workhouse, but there were 4 children all born in Union Lodge.

My best "guess" is that this formed, if you like, the gatehouse / gateway / entrance to Union Workhouse. It may have been provided as family housing, I do not think it was provided under Poor Law/ Relief, perhaps it was rented out to your relatives and the income used by the Union towards funding the Workhouse etc.

Many thanks. That makes sense and ties up loose ends.
