Parish of The Lea (General)
by kirksteel42, Saturday, October 09, 2010, 17:44 (5164 days ago)
Joshua Matthews age 19 married Mary Ann Cadle age 18 Oct 5th 1874
Marriage soleminized by Banns in the Parish of The Lea in the County of Hereford and Gloucester
Residence given for both is Hamlet of Newland
Why not marry in Newland? It is quite a distance between the two villiages
Would the church be St John the Baptist in Lea?
No record of the marriage in the Parish Records ?

I think that Lea marriages upto 1837 have been transcribed - hence yours being "missing".
Sometimes Marriages take place in other parishes because the Vicar was more "liberal" / "tolerant"....Parental consent not forthcoming perhaps ?
Query Mary Ann's "real" age - was she 18 in 1874 ? i.e. born 1855/56
Neither am I convinced yet that she is a daughter of Charles and Ann

1861 Census, Mary CADLE - born c1857, Leamington Priors (see previous message)
Only Joshua MATTHEWS marriage certificate/transcript to Mary Ann CADLE in 1874 will solve this; may be 'Kirksteel42' has this certificate as an actual date of 5 October 1874 and ages/residence were given in the original request.
Which takes us back to the original question
'Why not marry in Newland? Residence given for both is Hamlet of Newland'
If Harriett CADLE (Marriage J/F/M Qtr 1876 and Charlotte CADLE O/N/D 1876) married in the same Church/Parish of Lea - and are her sisters, this may solve the puzzle.

On freeBMD but not apparently on Ancestry's version ofteh "same" data - strange

(Not read all the replies) but when I was looking for Lea BMD's as my g-grandmother was born there, I'm sure I saw a parish map where the area around Lea Bailey (a strip of land along the Herefordshire border) was named Newland, there was at least one other area of the Forest, other than "Newland" named as Newland. If I remember rightly I was told these were areas that for some reason were taken under the wing of Newland parish
But baptisms etc happened in Lea (Bailey) it was a long haul to Newland just to wet a babies head.
