Family Tree Charts (General)

by sarah phelps @, Tuesday, October 12, 2010, 13:38 (5161 days ago)

Hi everyone.

Can anyone suggest a really good tree chart for presenting your family tree. The one I have is basic and bland and I am giving one as a gift and would like something a bit special / different / ornate.

Hand written or p.c format I don't mind.

Many thanks

Sarah

I use The Master Genealogist from Wholly Genes. http://www.whollygenes.com/ I found it to be the most flexible. I initially downloaded demos of all the most commonly used programs and played with them before selecting The Master Genealogist. Like you I initially had a basic program and it drove me up the wall as I could not enter information I wanted to. Look at what it does on the website then download the demo and try it. Only buy the UK Gold version, the silver version is not nearly as good or flexible. With the American Dollar as it is at present it is a good time to purchase it.

Thanks for these, I bought software which has given me an excellent database but when I have attempted to print off a large family tree it has failed because the lines don't join up as it prints with margins around it. I will have a look at the ones suggested here instead. I bought the software specially to do family trees for family Christmas presents and was disappointed when it didn't do what I wanted it to.

The tree system on genesreunited.co.uk is good for efficient use of space, and you can print it out at various sizes. Mine is legible at about 420 names on I think 24 sheets of A4, but I wouldn't call it beautiful. Come bad weather and loads of patience, I might try reproducing it by hand on the back of wall lining paper using a medium that doesn't run. Getting a decent calligrapher to do something similar could be a fairly inexpensive way of customising a good-looking tree as well as a novel way of decorating a wall.

I did do but it made no difference! I'd love to have the time to do one by hand, e.g. buy a roll of wallpaper and do it in scroll form but it would take quite a lot of doing. I think the secret is not to be too ambitious with it at first and to do a tree for a particular line in the family.

You are always going to be restricted in what you can achieve using one of the common home printers connected to your computer if you want to print a chart containing many people.

If you want a good looking large family tree chart which you can put on the wall you may need to consider one of the professional pinting services that are available.

In doing a search on the internet I came across the following company located in the UK who specialise in printing family tree charts, there maybe others also who offer this kind of service.

I have never used one of these services myself but know of people who have and they were very pleased with what was produced. I am not endorsing this company or any others in any way, all I am doing is bringing to your attention that they are available.

Another firm you might try is www.genealogyprinters.com I saw some of their work at a Glamorgan family history day, looked good.

I have no interest in the firm.
