Lizzie Prosser of Newland (General)

Hi,
I have spent a considerable amount of time recently, trying to find who was the wife of a relative.
In 1901 a 2xGr.Uncle John Prosser born Hay Brecon, was living at the Tan House, Newland together with his Mother and step father George and Mary Williams. John had a wife Lizzie Prosser age 25 born Lydney, and 2 daughters Elsie Winifred b.1898, Alberta Susie b. 1901, both born Newland
Thanks to this web page I have been able to ascertain that they had a further 2 daughters Daisy and Dora. Elsie died 1907 and Dora 1908 and were buried at Newland.
I have failed to find a marriage for John and Lizzie. I have purchased a birth certificate for Alberta Susie, and her Mother's maiden name was Whittington. I have failed to find a birth for Elizabeth or Lizzie Whittington with a birth about 1875.
1911 census, John Prosser is living at Hay with my Gr.Grandfather (His brother-in-Law) and says he is married. Lizzie appears to be missing. and the 2 remaining daughters, Alberta and Daisy were living with a Ferneyhough family at St.Briavels.
The question which I would love to find the answer to is who was Lizzie Whittington/Prosser? There are several families of Whittingtons in and around the Coleford area, but Lizzie says that she was born Lydney.
I would be interested if anyone has Lizzie Whittington in their family tree, or if they can help in any way.
Many thanks
Rosemary

Hi
Many thanks for your help in finding the elusive Lizzie. She did sign her name when she was a witness at my Grandmother's marriage in 1903 at Newland, as Lizzie M Prosser. I have this morning contacted Abergavenny Register office to see if the marriage which you kindly pointed out in June quarter 1896, is one and the same John Prosser. I will keep you informed.
Two further aspects which I have thought about was, she may have been a widow before she married John Prosser, although this was not stated on the birth certificate of her daughter which I acquired. Or she may have been economic with the truth about her age.
Many thanks for all your help.
Regards
Rosemary

Hello
I have now received the marriage of John Prosser and Elizabeth Whittington of Newland 1901.
Details are John Prosser age 24 of Clodock son of John Prosser Deceased a farmer, and Elizabeth Whittington age 20 of Llanarth daughter of Edward Whittington deceased a mariner. Date of the marriage is 22 June 1896 at St. Marys Chapel (Roman Catholic) Llanarth Abergavenny.
All the details of John appears to be consistant with the John I have in my family tree, they were living at Clodock 1891.
I am not 100% convinced that this is same couple living at Tan house Newland in 1901.
John certainly wasn't Roman Catholic, and their 3 daughters were baptised at Newland the 4th daughter must have died at birth, she is buried at Newland. Information thanks to Forest of Dean family History.
Any thoughts would be helpful.

Elizabeth Whittington age 20 of Llanarth daughter of Edward Whittington deceased a mariner.
A mariner would be more at home in Lydney than Llanarth, nr Raglan :-)

Many thanks to slowhands and m p griffiths for your help in my search for the family of Lizzie Prosser (nee Whittington)
I think that the 2 children in Monmouth Union may be the children I am looking for. I am not sure at this stage if they are the children of Caroline and Samuel Whittington married at Parkend 1872, who appear to be missing 1881.
1891 Caroline is living at Atherton Leigh Lancs, her name is Caroline Morgan 37 born West Dean living on her own means. With her are her sons Samuel Whittington 16 born West Dean, William Morgan 9 born Tony Pandy, John Morgan 7 born Ogmore, and Thomas Morgan 5 born Pontypridd. Also there was a lodge John Dobbs age 27 born Coldeford
1901 Still living at Atherton Leigh Lancs but she had now married her lodger John Dobbs, Samuel Whittington age 27 William Morgan 19 and Thomas Morgan all stepsons of the head of the household John Dobbs.
Interesting point is that Daisy and Alberta Prosser the 2 children of Lizzie and John Prosser from Newland went to Leigh and were married 1921 and 1923 at Leigh.
Will try and find the connection.
Many thanks
Rosemary

Just recently did some research on the Prosser family and have read the thread that you started 2010. I wonder, did you ever find out where Lizzie disappeared to. I concluded the marriage failed - John off to B-i-Law's farm in Hay. Kids farmed out to the couple in St Briavels. Then I found John Prosser in Hay Mental Hospital on the 1939 Census.
I believe Daisy Mary Prosser was adopted some time between the 1911 census and 1915 by Albert and Dorothy Addis from Clearwell, Coleford, FoD. Intrigued to know the connection between these 2 families (if any).

I have spent a lot of time on this family in the past, and I am unable to add any further information. One of my brickwalls with a big question mark hanging over it.
Any further information would be very acceptable.

I'll do a bit more digging and let you know if I come up with anything. I'll build a tree on Ancestry - are you a member?

Thanks very much Allan.
Yes I am a member of Ancestry, but I do not enter family trees on there. I use it primarily to look up information!
