Death of a Policeman (General)

My mother, a Smith born 1914, told me that some of her Grandmother Sarah DAVIS' brothers from Yorkley had been involved in the death of a policeman who was out on his horse one dark night when a gang of men which included the Davises, strung a rope across the road and the policeman was thrown from his horse and died.
Sarah's brothers were John 1834-1893, James 1836-1859, William 1838, George 1840-1925 and Thomas 1843-1930.
It does not look as though any of them were charged with murder as the ones who died before 1900 were buried at Park End.
As it is a family story I expect that some details have been altered through the years.
If anyone out there has heard of this story I would be grateful to know more details!

Thank you for that - perhaps it was a tall tale after all as all the brothers appear in all the census' so it cannot be 1861 and 1895 is too late.
