Griffiths of Greenbottom East Dean (General)

by Phill52, Sunday, October 24, 2010, 18:18 (5149 days ago)

I'm trying to find some details of my great great grandfather John Griffiths who was born in about 1840 in East Dean, he was married to Martha Gibbs from Little Dean and they lived in Greenbottom East Dean. I'm attempting to do the family tree but I can't seem to get any further back than them. any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info. Made me look twice though as my son is also M.P.Griffiths.
Doubly confirms it for me that john and william were brothers. Seems like my family in those days they didn't stray very far!

Green Bottom

Elizabeth GRIFITS - age 25 - Paper Factor ?- born in County
Elizabeth - 4
John - 2

(no sign of William)

Hi
I am descended from the William Thomas GRIFFITHs b. 1843, who was the brother of your John GRIFFITHS, and also had siblings Sophia (b1846), Harriet (b1848), James (b1849), George (b1853) and Martha (b1860).

I have struggled to find this family at all in 1851 - I think the data you have for 1841 is correct, but again I can't see William here. If anyone has any leads on this, it would be appreciated!

The family lived for many years in Green Bottom, which is a beautiful hamlet in the Forest.

My theory is that the grandparents are William GRIFFITHS and Sophia WELCH from Staunton, who you can find on the site at

If you look in the registers the name Sylvanus keeps cropping up and was passed down the generations to my great uncle Owen Silvanus GRIFFITHs who died in 1982 in Pontefract, Yorkshire. I believe it means 'from the woods'.
