Thanks for that. Unfortunately it doesn't help to solve the mystery. It's rather complicated, but here goes!

My TOOZE research goes back to the marriage of Richard TOES to Mary CARRIER in Goodrich, Herefordshire on 25 May 1790. There are other CARRIER's in Goodrich, but no TOOZE. Richard and Mary had a daughter, Mary, in Goodrich in 1791 and a son, William, in Woolaston in 1802. I can't find any reference to Richard and Mary after this date. I think it's possible that Richard may have died as in the Parish Records on this site there is a Mary TOES, Widow marrying a John JAMES, Widower at Alvington on 11 April 1808. If anyone has a record of the death of Richard TOES it would be very helpful. Then on 29 July 1810 Mary TOES baptised an illegitimate child, John James TOES, son of Mary (no father's name?) at Lydney. On 25 December 1811 John TOES, 18 months is buried at Awre. On 13 October 1812 Mary TOES, Spinster married James EDWARDS, Bachelor at Awre. They appear to have at least seven children between 1815 and 1832. Then on 22 November 1819 Mary TOOZE, aged 27 is buried at Newland. Who is this Mary? Did she have the illegitimate child?

If this is too hard, perhaps someone could help me locate where Richard TOES came from. I think he may be connected to one of the few early TOOZE families in The Forest. Henry TOOZE and his wife Catherine were at Newland and in the 1861 Census Henry and family were living at 'The Lamb Inn'. According to the 1851 Census he was born in Hopworthy (?) in Devonshire. Does anyone have either Richard or Henry in their family?

A bit of a 'tall order', but you never know!
