I can't thank you enough for4 all the information. I had a great deal of it but I didn't know when Mary Ann and John were married. "George" in the census is indeed my grandfather but I hadn't heard that anyone ever called him by his middle name. A surprise in 1983 was that Uncle Jim's name was really Thomas . .

I never thought to look in Newport . . .the family moved a good bit, in the area of Pontypool, in Cardiff, and always retuning to Box Tree Cottage and the Forest. During the 1881 census I believe William was in Hirwaun with his parents, working with his father in a pit there as a coal rider.

My brother didn't remember much of the story other than William was 32 when he died. I don't think I had heard that until last week, but it fits with Charlie being a babt if the William who died in Newport was the correct William.I

If family history is accurate he didn't die in the tunnel itself since the bends doesn't present until after the atmospheric pressure has changed. I didn't know where he might have gone before symptoms presented, but did hear that he was in agony wh3en he went and that it was a blessing that his suffering ended.

I put his death between 1881 and 1884 so the death in Newport certainly fits. I'll send for the record and hope that solves the mystery! (Please excuse the typing ~~ I'm using my phone with its impossibly small keyboard to send this.

Thanks again.
