Marriage of George Annetts and Phoebe Horlick (General)

by djmfhr111 @, Thursday, November 04, 2010, 12:39 (5138 days ago)

Has anyone come across the marriage record for George Annetts (1805-1865) collier of Ruardean Hill and Phoebe Horlick (1811-1876) of Micheldean/Ruardean?
The earliest baptism record for their children is Feb 1832 for John Lewis Annetts at Ruardean independent chapel where Phoebe's father is minister.

George and Phoebe Annetts are together with their children on the 1841 and 1851 census in Ruardean Hill and living separately in Ruardean Hill in 1861.
I'm sure I must have the right Phoebe as Phoebe Annetts is listed as a daughter in the Rev John Horlick's will and one of George and Phoebe's daughters is christened Phoebe Horlick Annetts.

Many Thanks

Alice

Marriage of George Annetts and Phoebe Horlick

Hi Alice

I have a George Annetts 1805 baptised 14 Apr 1805 who marries Phoebe 1812 in my family tree.

I should explain that I always follow spouses siblings and parents and sometimes get carried away. In this case the grandparents of George Annetts are James Annetts 1735 & Susanna Banfield. The father of George Annetts 1805 was James Annetts 1776. He had a sister Susanna 1770 who married William Nelmes 1761, their son Moses Nelmes 1805 married Hannah Meek 1813, daughter of Joseph Meek 1782 & Hannah Cooke 1792 - subject of a number of postings.

James Annetts 1735 & Susanna Banfield also had (amongst 7 children) a daughter Mary and I will not detail it here but if you move on 5 generations you get to Ann Charlotte Lillian Powell 1905 who married Thomas Moll born 7 Sep 1902 Oglesby LaSalle, IL. USA, who was the son of Edward Moll born 17 Oct 1782 Maldegem, Belgium as Eduard de Mauw. He changed his name - or had it changed for him when he emigrated to America - see my Picture Ed Moll's Bar. The picture is of a number of emigree Forest of Dean miners standing outside a bar in Oblesby Illinois.

What is really interesting here is that I didn't know Phoebe's surname but I do have the Rev John Horlick in my Family Tree as a couple of generations away you get to an Ann Marfell. So I look forward to Slowhands contribution for confirmation.

Thanks for that. I did not have the 1841 Census detail, I did have all the birth's and baptism's but I did it the hard way, I have never really got the hang of the advanced search, perhaps someone could do an "Idiot's Guide" for idiots like me !!

I did forget to mention one point - Elizabeth Horlick 1808 married Timothy Marfell 1808 at Ruardean 16 Dec 1834. She died 18 Feb 1842 and he went on to marry Elizabeth Mansell 1805 on 19 Oct 1843 Cheltenham she died 22 May 1854 and he went on to marry Elizabeth Lewis Gagg 1835 at Ruardean 13 March 1856. Timothy didn't waste much time between the death of one Elizabeth and the marriage of the next. I have the marriage certificates for the last two, the first pre 1837 so no certificate. Timothy Marfell died 11 Feb 1883 and the last Elizabeth nee Gagg died 25 Sep 1885.

He followed his first father in law by being a minister:

Memorial Inscription :
From Hope Mansell:
Timothy third son of Jonathan MARFELL of this parish died at Mitcheldean, 11th February 1883 aged 75 farmer and Congregational Minister, Ruardean.

Extract from the Marfell Family Newsletter Fall 2002 Concerning Timothy Marfell 1808.
..... The nineteenth century poet in the family was Timothy. He was also an independent minister. Poor Timothy - apparently he never prospered much in a financial way from either vocation, for two of his brothers, according to their wills, left trust funds from which the interest was to be paid to Timothy at regular intervals. Timothy's poem entitled Old Times, written in 1865, describes the life he and his brothers endured on the farm as they were growing up. It is a fine picture of English rural life of that period. His poem Different Wishes is a lovely, tender composition. This one with two other short ones that have survived reveal the richness of the author's spiritual life.

Of the other "Rev's" children; Benedicta 1816 married Samuel Constance 1815, John Robert 1818 married Maria Ballinger 1819 2 children, Thomas Lewis 1825 married Sarah Merriman 1826. Maria Ballinger 1819 had a sister Ann Ballinger 1813 who also married a Samuel Constance 1811 who had a different father to the Samuel Constance 1815 who married Benedicta. Samuel Constance 1811 & Ann Ballinger 1813 had a son Samuel Constance 1847 who married Ann Marfell 1838.

John Horlick and Hannah Ellis had one child:

The biography of John Horlick from 1858

Thanks for that. No sign of George Annetts and Phoebe on the same register ?

Painswick Church has not been transcribed. I just looked on the internet for Painswick Church and there is a web site with a list of names. Annetts or Horlick is not shown, but having clicked on a few names at random, I cannot understand their connection with Painswick.

Have just edited this item, having gone through the thread again, the marriage of George Annetts and Phoebe is listed sorry.

Phoebe's father John Horlick was born in Painswick in about 1778 (from 1851 census)

According to John Horlick's biography his parents were Robert and Elizabeth Horlick but I don't have his baptism record

Robert Horlick m. Elizabeth Millard Painswick 23 Aug 1771 (from IGI)

John Horlick was posted to Micheldean to minister in the cong. church by Rev Corneluis Winter of Painswick in about 1800.

Thanks Alice

I didn't have the burials. I went back as far as Nicholas 1704. A perfect example of taking "connected", rather than "related" people back too far, and thanks to your information I have gone back a further generation !!

There is no-one in my Family Tree that I cannot trace back to me eventually, but sometimes it takes a bit of working out.
