Raymond Wilce (General)
by robert wilce, Wednesday, November 10, 2010, 21:12 (5134 days ago)
I am seeking information about my half brother Raymond Wilce who was born in about 1917 and who, until the age of about 17, lived in Wonastow Road, Monmouth. I think Raymond was in the RAF, perhaps stationed at Gloucester, during the 1939-1945 war.

Raymond was born in 1917 or 1918 probably in Monmouth or Leominster. He was bought up in Monmouth by our Great Aunt Sarah Padmore and used the name Raymond Padmore until about 1934 when he left Monmouth, at this time he used the name Raymond Wilce.

I have tried all the likely names and locations but have been unable to locate Raymond. I was hoping that someone might see his name in your forum and might remember him or know something of him.

You could write to The MONMOUTHSHIRE BEACON newspaper letters page.
Unfortunately my mothers relations who relate to the Yeates/Wilce line have died but will ask.

Thank you for the idea about the 'Monmouthshire echo' I'll give it a go. Following the life of my grandfather Thomas Wilce I found a Thomas Wilce staying with the Yates family in Tredegar (I don't think, now, that this was my Thomas Wilce) but there was a relationship between the Yates and the Wilce family from Barry, who had a son called Raymond born at about the time that my Raymond Wilce was born.
There were three Thomas Wilces, of about the same age, in the South Wales/ Monmouth/Gloucester area at the same time. In the end I gave up trying to find which was which and just followed the one with obvious and firm connection.

Re the Padmore connection
Thomas Wilkes m. Hester H. Padmore in Monmouth 1887
In 1891Thomas Wilce was lodging/living with the Yates/Yeates family in Tredegar / he was b. USA
In 1891 Hester H. Wilce was living with her mother in Monmouth.
This transcribed as Hester H. Padmore but Wilce actually on Census.
I do not have the marriage certificate.
Perhaps you could give some more information from Raymond back to Thomas Wilce.

Harold married Rosa Hughes Rowland in September 1917. Rosa died in November 1918. They had a son Raymond and the child who was bought up by Sarah Padmore, Raymonds great aunt, in Monmouth. This is the Raymond about whom I am trying to find some information.

Think the wills/ census prove the Monmouth Yates/Yeates/Wilce connection .
It might be interesting to send for the wills as they might contain information about family members or perhaps you already have them.
I saw the other marriage to Rosa and her death whilst searching for the elusive Raymond.
Note the marriage is transcribed under WILES on FREE BMD.
This might be the same problem with Raymond/ perhaps mis- transcribed.
It is rather odd that C. H. Wilce states that he does not have children on his WW1 army record although an R is written in the space.
