I have found a marriage for Thomas Hancocks and Patience Haynes, It states they were married Dec.3'1839 in Parish-Chapel Newnham. Both of them listed St.Briavels as their residence. Thomas's father was David Hancocks a blacksmith and Patience's father was John Haynes a thatcher. I believe that Thomas & Patience are my 3great-grandparents,They moved to America in the early 1850's.I am looking for any info regarding them prior to the move to America. The only Thomas & Patience Hancock I have found on the 1841 census was in Llanelly,Wales. Both the marriage certificate and the census list, Thomas is a miner. Any information for these two people or their Families would be appreciated. Thank you, Ed Hancock

As Thomas & Patience HANCOCK came to America in early 1850's - what children from England went with them?

If they had children in Llanelly, which comes under Crickenhowell District: - there is on FreeBDM - a few HANCOCK children born there.

(2) David HANCOCKS, A/MJ Qtr 1844
Edward HANCOCKS - J/A/S Qtr 1846
John HANCOCKS - A/M/J Qtr 1848
Mary Jane HANCOCKS - A/M/J Qtr 1850
Philip George HANCOCKS - J/F/M Qtr 1851

On the Church of Latter Day Saints, there is a Patience HAINES christened 12 March 1809 at Standish, Gloucestershire, parents John HAINES & Elizabeth. (Patience HANCOCK age 30 on the 1841 census)

There are HAINES christened also at St Briavels - Jane 1806, John 1808, Charles 1812, parents John HAINES & Elizabeth.

John (the Thatcher) - I think, would have worked in lots of local places - Not sure which areas in Gloucestershire, had thatched roofs!!! - In the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire there are still many.

Would be interesting to know, how the 'average' workman cottage was constructed/roofed in the FOD, as the occupation 'Thatcher' is something I can't remember being mentioned before for this area.

According to a passenger list Patience and four sons arrived in New York on Sept. 27 1852. It states Patience's age as 44 which would have her birth about 1808, from what I could find I believe she died in 1859 and her age listed is 50, so she could have been born 1809.The sons were Griffith who's age 11 at arrival, John age 9, Edward age 6, and George an infant. George would be my 2nd great grandfather, doing quick math George would have been born about 1851, So the George you found would be the right time-line. I know he is listed as Philip George on the record, on George's headstone it has George P. Hancock, so I'm wandering if this is him. Every U.S. census has different birth years and places of birth for all the children. There is biographical and genealogy book that was published in 1911 that said Thomas & Patience had a total of 11 children, but only the three youngest, John,Edward, and George reached adulthood. There is no mention of the names for the other children, so you may have listed some of them. I just have no idea who they were. I didn't realize that a thatcher would have been somewhat rare. Thank you for the help and possible leads to follow. Ed

You could order Philip George HANCOCKS certificate by contacting

The General Records Office - will try and do the link (as it seems to have moved web sites)

http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/gro

This would give you his mother's maiden name, father's name and occupation, place and date of birth etc

I would re-check the details on FreeBMD (in case I've copied it incorrectly)

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Birth: January/February/March Qtr 1851

LLANELLY + BRYNMAWR - website

by m p griffiths @, Friday, November 19, 2010, 07:33 (5123 days ago) @ slowhands

1841 Census, Breconshire, Llanelly District 8

Supt's Reg.District: Crickenhowell, Registrar's District: Llanelly

'All that part of the Parish of Llanelly which is contained within a line commencing at the boundary west of the coalyard, Brynmawr to the Heathcock, thence along the boundary to King Street along southside of King Street to Glamorgan Street, thence along westside of Glamorgan Street to the coal yard'

Thomas HANCOCK - 25 - Miner (not born in County)
Patience HANCOCK - 30 (not born in County)

The 1851 census - the HANCOCKS/CANCOX (reads HANCOX on census return - and Patience is quite clear) are in (Orchard Street) District 8 - and the Enumerator's notes follow the same route

The Brynmawr Wales History - Genealogy Project

http://www.thomasgenweb.com/brynmawr.html

This website had a great deal of information - maps etc etc & links to ordering certificates .... including the 1841 census District 8 - with Thomas & Patience HANCOCK, living in Prossers Row - This website has been put together by the family (THOMAS) who emigrated from there to American in 1850

--------

1851 census - as Patience says she was born Gloucester, Gloucestershire - and if she turns out to be nee HAINES - there is another Patience HAINES on Church of Latter Day Saints??

Patience HAINES - 29 December 1805 - Saint Mary De Lobe, Gloucester, parents John & Ann HAINES

? Church of Latter Day Saints: David HANCOCK married Elizabeth HERBERT - 26 March 1803 - Amroth, Pembroke, Wales. These are two children on CLDS - Edward - 6 February 1804 and William 26 January 1817

1841 Census, Pembrokeshire, Amroth
Summerhill Croft

Elizabeth HANDCOCK, 56 - Carrier (all born in County)
George - 14
William - 8

?

1841 census St Mary De Lobe

Ann HAINES - 64
John HAINES - 29 - labourer

Looking at the HAINES family in Gloucester on later census, John HAINES is married and there is a James HAINES and his family who name one of their children Patience!

? Gloucestershire Burial Index

John HAINES 1 May 1818, age 39, Barton St Mary

Patience HAINES - 29 December 1805 - Saint Mary De Lobe, Gloucester, parents John & Ann HAINES

This family using St Mary de Lode Church in Gloucester looks a "good" fit

I think Ed may be lucky - with George just being two months old on the 1851 census (just about makes it) - before they 'cross the pond'

Thank you to both of you! I see I'm going to busy this weekend. Great Tips ! The 1851 census looks real promising. The children birth years are so close. Thank you again, Ed
