Births at St Briavels, 1052-c1400 (General)
by Jenny Armour, Friday, November 26, 2010, 06:19 (5116 days ago)
I have been given details of my ancestral families of DE DENEs, and BAYNHAMs born here, with no sources. Can anyone suggest how these can be validated.
Thank you, Jenny Armour

ap Eynon and de Dene ancestry.

as for validation... you have a few sources to look at including
http://www.archive.org/stream/bookofdenedeanea00dean/bookofdenedeanea00dean_djvu.txt
the entries in IGI such as :-
John ap Eignon or Baynham
--------------------------------------
Event(s):
Birth: About 1373 Dene, Gloucester, Gloucester, England
------------------------------------
Parents:
Father: Thomas Ap Eignon
-----------------------------------------
Marriages:
Spouse: Mrs. Elizabeth Ap Eignon or Baynham
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Messages:
Record submitted by a member of the LDS Church.
The record often shows the name of the individual and his or her
relationship to a descendant, shown as the heir, family representative, or relative.
The original records are not indexed, and you may have to look at the film
frame-by-frame to find the information you want. A family group record for this
couple may be in the Family Group Record Collection; Archive Section.
(See the Family History Library Catalog for the film number.) These records
are alphabetical by name of the father or husband.

Film Number: 471447
another to consider :-
Ralph Ap EYNON was born about 1306 in Newland, Gloucestershire, England.
He was married to Johanna De DENE on 18 Apr 1332 in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, England. Children were: Thomas Ap EYNON.
Thomas Ap EYNON was born about 1332 in Newland, Gloucestershire, England. Parents: Ralph Ap EYNON and Johanna De DENE.
Children were: Thomas Ap EYNON.
Thomas Ap EYNON was born about 1354 in Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England. Parents: Thomas Ap EYNON.
Without wishing to offend anyone - at best you will get is a "feel" for the ancestry unless a documented family archive has been kept or a "peerage" style lineage - as in the Norman "de DENE" title is available.

Access Public Members Tree (Ancestry)
by m p griffiths , Sunday, November 28, 2010, 08:11 (5114 days ago) @ Jenny Armour
You need subscribe to Ancestry.
On the first page - there are various headings. The third box along (from the left) - Heading: SEARCH - put the "mouse" on this and this drops down a list. The 8th item is Public Member Tree. Click. A search box appears - enter details e.g. Enyon, Gloucestershire etc. Then a list appears with the Heading: My Family - if the words Public Member Tree are underneath, this one can access the tree. Contact can also be made with the Subscriber.

The Ancestry Public trees are a fantastic tool, but beware the first time I viited them I found several inaccuracies in the first two trees that I looked up. The mistake being mirrored in other related trees. My concern is that once the tree is published and accepted by other users the errors could be accepted as a true record. It is best to leave a "post-it" or contact the tree owner to put the record straight

Also, a word of caution - you may be fortunate to find "your" tree / branch on a Public web site - you can just accept this information and plough on. However my advice is to use this information as a guide and revalidate it against multiple sources and your own common sense. You may be surprised at how many assumptions have been made, which in turn cause you to reject parts of this information.
By the way, the same is true of any of the responses I provide on this Forum.

With regards to the Library Access to Ancestry you may not have the ability to get to the Public Member Trees, it will depend on what the Local Authority has paid for. I'm sure that the one in my local library doesn't allow it, and that you only get the basic searchs. Will check tomorrow just to make sure.

You can get 14 days free trial with Ancestry. I did and then bought a family tree programme with the Tesco deals (£15 of Tesco vouchers) which includes 6 months' subscription to Ancestry. Hope that might be of use to you.

Thanks to everyone - you have made such helpful suggestions. I don't live in UK, so can't make use of the Tesco hint, and I didn't get to the Library today because the rains and storms were so bad the power kept going off. I think the monsoon has finally arrived. But you have all given me lots to think about.
Best wishes

Hi John & Val,
welcome to this friendly forum. Did you know that it is "only" one part of a fantastic website that has so many different sections that should interest you if you take time to search it out. From the top blue menu you can find the Home page which will lead you into huge collections of Old Maps, Old Photos, old Documents such as Inquests & Wills, Newspaper cuttings, readable eBooks, Memorial Inscriptions, and so on etc etc; all of which is searchable. There is also a huge Parish Records database which can be searched in many ways, particularly via the "Advanced Search" link which can give great results from minimal inputs, please try it out and see. As a starter just by quickly entering "Baynham" and ticking the "Soundex" box to allow for spelling variations you'll get access to 1277 individual Parish Records across the area.
If you need specific help by all means ask on this forum, but I'm sure you'll find lots of interest yourselves.
Happy Hunting !
