WILKS family of Weston-under-Penyard

The first name I have traced was John Wilks born c1690, but where the family originated from is a mystery. His eldest son was John (1715-1800) and then George became the favoured name. John's son George was born in 1744 and married Susanna Weaver; their son George (1778-1845) married Mary who I believe is the widow you mention who lived at Hill Croft, but I can find no actual record of their marriage. William may be her nephew ? Their son was George (b.1810)who married Jane James, and his son was also George (1838-1911)who married Eliza Morgan. My Grandfather Henry Tom was born at Tump Cottages in 1874, but I have no knowledge of the subsequent history of the family in the area.

Henry Tom WILKS 1874 -1962 Ryford / Weston-under-Penyard

Thank you for the information you have given which ties in with my own sources. Henry Tom met his wife Mary Ann (Deen) when they were both servants at Woodfields, Llangarren. They moved to Monkland, Leominster after marriage, but did return to Weston at the start of World War I. After the war Henry Tom was employed as a gardener at various houses in Herefordshire and he died in Hereford in 1962. My father was Henry George (Harry) who eventually returned to the Forest of Dean when he became Chief Collector at the former Lydney District Council in 1965. He lived at Greenways, Lydney. I remember being taken to Weston by my Aunt Phyllis in the 1960s to visit her relatives at Tump Cottages and I would be interested to know if any of the Wilks family still live in the area who have any further information.

WILKS Ryford / Weston-under-Penyard area

Thanks, I will check that out. There was a Frank Wilks who married Elsie Jennings in 1949 who I believe may have been the last direct family member to live at Tump Cottages. I believe he died 10 years or so ago. There may be other local families who were connected to the Wilks family by marriage, such as Meek and Marfell. However, I will not pursue this thread further as it seems there are no Wilks family members who read the forum.

I have just picked up this thread. My maiden name was Wilks. So far I have traced my family to Lea, and have tentative links back to Weston-Under-Penyard. My Great Grandfather (baptised in Lea in 1858) was William Alexander Wilks. His father was William Wilks and Mother Anne Tranter. I believe William snr was born in Weston-Under-Penyard in 1820 but his marriage record (1843) shows he was living in Aston Ingham. His father is recorded as John Wilks. I am sure there is a link to the George Wilks' in Weston, but have not yet proved this link.

Note that on the database William Alexander's surname is shown as Wilkes. I have a copy of his Certificate of Baptism which shows his surname as Wilks. May be a typo in the database? His siblings show as Wilks also.

Wilks or Wilkes was one of the most common names of the 18 and 19 centuries in Weston and the adjacent parishes. I have searched the records of my family branch who were based around Ryeford, Pontshill, Bailey, and Lane End, but unfortunately cannot find any link with your William or John Wilks in those periods. There may well be a link going further back in time but this would be difficult to find. The first ancestor of mine I have been able to trace living in Weston was John Wilks (circa 1690 - 1757) who married a Mary Allen or Allom in 1715.
