Hi I was looking though some pictures of my families graves I took when I vistied St B a couple of months ago and found one that had the following inscription:

...also his wife Maggie May Williams B.E.M. died 24th Sept 1995...

Could anyone enlighten me to the meaning of B.E.M. ?
Thanks!
Alice

British Empire Medal? Awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown. It was awarded in the UK until 1992 - still awarded in some Commonwealth realms.

The National Archives has the lists of those awarded the BEM, when and what for. Look at Medals: Civilian Gallantry as a starting point.
