Free Miners (General)
by lodnles, Tuesday, December 07, 2010, 08:16 (5105 days ago)
Please can someone point me in the right direction for information on "Free Minig". I understand that this was granted to locally born sons of miners after having worked for a year and a day underground. Is there any known list or register of such "free miners"?

Freeminers "had" the rights to the extracted minerals - with a share to the Crown - it was possible to hold the Gale but sub-let the extraction work to generate an income without doing the dirty / dangerous work

My apologies for not thoroughly searching the Forum Archives before posting this question regarding "Free Miners". Reprimand accepted!
I have discovered a note that my great-great-grandfather, Richard SIER, was residing at 38 Greenway Littledean on 8 Sep 1838 at the time of his Freeminer registration.
Like too many amateur family historians I failed to make a record of where this information came from - and anyrate, my filing system leaves much to be desired!
Other family names from Forest of Dean are Henry COOK and son James (1833) and also James COOPER and son Maynard (1833).

Did you know that there is now, for the first time, a woman who is a free miner. She was permitted to be one not long ago, certainly in 2010. Up until now women were excluded from being free miners. I think my ancestors would have fully approved of this move if they were anything like me!
