EVANS at Hawsley/Hausley/Horse lea

I am researching my ancestors in Hausley, which I have seen
spelt differently at different times as Horsley, Hawsley,
Hausley and Horse lea. It is up the hill from Joys Green,
near Lydbrook. Does anyone know the history of this area?

My gg grandparents were William EVANS b. 1841 (est)
Bicknor, West Dean, Collier
and Mary EVANS b 1848 (est) East Dean.
Children were
William John Evans b. 1872
Charles James Evans b.1874 (my g-grandad)
Millicent M Evans b. 1876
Morgan Sidney Evans b.1879
Lewis Evans b. 1883
Frank Evans b. 1885
Joyce Evans b. 1892

I don't know their marriage date or place, but their first
child (that I know of) was born in 1872.

I have them on the 1881 and 1891 census living 4 entries
away from the Masons Arms, Hausley. On the 1871 there are two families (called Evance) who could be them, with almost exactly the same ages, names and places of birth, living next door-but-one to each other - I wondered if the enumerator could have enumerated them twice?

Does anyone have any information about the Mason's Arms? Family
legend says that our family owned a warehouse behind it at
one time.

A younger son of the family, Morgan Sydney EVANS b. 1879
was said in the family to have been Headmaster of Cinderford
Grammar school. Does anyone have access to the records to
check this?

My Great Uncle, Charles Gough, told me that he had visited family there up to few years ago,who were living at Pludds Farm. I think they were relatives of Joyce Evans. Does anyone know of this farm or this family?

William John Evans and Charles James Evans moved to Kinsley in Yorkshire and settled there.

If anyone can give me any of the above information or any
other about the area and life at the time I would be very
grateful.

Thankyou

Janet Ford (nee Evans)

The 1871 Census image is very interesting, the write up of the Census notes seems to have Joseph as a Bigamist , and the entry for dwelling 16 appears again at 18 ( strangely its written almost like 16 )
The "Jovial Colliers" or "Sawyers Arms" might be to blame :-)

Hi

Thanks for these - it is comforting that you have found the same family on the earlier censuses as I have, so maybe it is right :-) I don't want to claim them until I am certain. I will have to find William and Mary's marriage to be sure, but I haven't had any luck on freebmd.

Something that still puzzles me though, is that on later censuses William Evans gives Bicknor, West Dean as his birthplace. Is this near enough to Moorwood to be a reasonable statement?

Thanks a lot for the censuses :-)

Janet

Distances --- the square containing Moorwood, Horse Lea, High Beech, and out to the Pludds in the east is probably about a mile square....

He probably said "Bicknor" to the census taker - which is the Parish for parts of Lydbrook . The boundary for East and West Dean (here) is the Lyd Brook flowing down to the Wye. The enumerator proabablty added the West Dean to his notes. looking at the image the W abbr. for west looks as though it started as an E, suggesting the enumerator was not sure either !

I've always placed Joys Green, Moorwood, Horse Lea Readings, Pludds etc in East Dean , whilst Anchorberry/Hangerberry, Worral Hill on the other side of the Lyd would be West Dean. Bicknor parish is on the west side ( or at least most of it , as I'm not sure where the parish boundary is - or was in the 1860's).

So my advice is don't be too worried by the West Dean or the Bicknor, it points to the correct area, teh census data is only as good as what was given , and what has been recorded ... my experience is that thats pretty consistent compared to some I have seen :-)

Later census entries tend to support the East Dean / Lydbrook line.

Mary MORGAN 1848 Moorwood ??

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Saturday, May 20, 2006, 03:22 (6763 days ago) @ Janet Ford

This needs further investigation and certificates ...
however taking the 1871 census and the multiple "wifes", one deduction is that William is married to Mary with young children and living at his parents home. Not unusual , so looking around 1866 for a possible marriage a Mary MORGAN of Moorwood possibly marries a William EVANS. Based on that assumption the following entries need some detective work........

and just why did Sidney gain Morgan as a christian name ???
