Does anyone know of a place called Cop Meadows in Lydbrook where my mother says she was born in a little white house. My Mother is 94 and talks all the time about her old home. Any information would be great. Thank you. Whitegoosegal

Could it be Cowmeadow?
There is a Cowmeadow farm in English Bicknor and a Cow Meadow Orchard.....
Nearer the village Cowmeadow Farm was built c. 1820 next to older farm buildings.

Thanks for your answer but no, I know that it is a place above Lydbrook and Mum could look down on the village from the house. What does interest me is your name. One of my ancestors was a Gunter from Lydbrook Mary Anne Gunter was my Mothers Aunt, perhaps we are relatives in some way. Regards whitegoosegal.

Hi, My Mothers aunt was a Jones before marriage and after marriage she became known as Granny Gunter because she seems to have looked after children of the village. If you are of the family it would be great to share notes. Regards Irene.

Had a few problems with the link - so just in case I have copied the note here
[I WOULD be very pleased to hear from anyone who knew my grandfather Henry Isaac Jones or my grandmother Annie Elizabeth who lived and died in Lydbrook.
My mother Dorothy Florence Jones is 94 years old and lost both her parents when she was about seven years old. She was eventually adopted by an aunt and uncle in Yorkshire when she was 16 years old but before that was raised by ‘Granny’ Mary Anne Gunter in Lydbrook. Granny Gunter was really my mothers aunt, sister to her father. There were also two other brothers, James and John.
Mum says she was born at a place called Cop meadow but cannot remember much about the place and longs to hear more about her family, any little titbits will fill in some blanks for her and for her children.
Can you help? Do you have any old photographs that we could copy and make an album for her. We may have left all this a bit late, but you know the old saying better late than never and it would make an old lady very happy to be reunited with her family even if only in photographs.
Please help if you can, any scrap of information is better than nothing. My name is Irene Toddington and I live at Tregantle House, Tregatillian, Cornwall TR9 6JQ. . Thank you for any information.

I understand from two reliable local sources that Cop Meadows ran along the hillside behind what is known as Sarah Siddons' house

Thank you very much, I know that area though I have never been to see it. Do you know if there are any cottages still there. My Mother was born there and I have been trying to get a photograph for her but have not had any luck. Regards Irene

There are no cottages on the hill above Cop Meadows, as Bill from Forge Hill confirms in another posting.
A photo of 'Lydbrook Bell Hill 1930' in the 'Lydbrook 2' series of old photos on this site shows Sarah Siddon's house in the bottom right hand corner with the start of Cop Meadows behind and extending to the right off photo, to the left of the house is Bell Hill.

There was a Whitehall cottage in this "area" - up on the hill side above the main road heading towards the old viaduct

From my cousin who lives in Forge Hill, Joys Green.
I have sent this on to Gill - Bill knows more about Lydbrook families than I do - the names ring a bell but that is all.
If these are the meadows opposite me - then she was probably born on Bell Hill or in a cottage which stood in the middle of the meadows - completely gone now!
Would be better looking at all the photos of Lydbrook and families on the Sungreen site wouldn't she!
I think there are some Gunters there. http://www.sungreen.co.uk/
