Another HALFORD (or JENKINS) (General)

by sheilaweb @, Monday, December 13, 2010, 08:53 (5099 days ago)

I had traced my family back to the 1851 Census in East Dean. My g- grandfather was George HALFORD,
one of the sons of George and Harriet HALFORD of East Dean. George and his brother Charles were both
christened at the same time on 9 Feb 1845 at Blakeney.

Can anyone tell me when and where my g-grandfather George HALFORD was born? He is
'about 8' in the 1851 census, so he would be born about 1843, but I have not found him.

I looked back through the letters to the Forum and I read a letter from Janet JENKINS on Oct 23 2009 and
I was amazed and intrigued to learn that this family changed its name from JENKINS to HALFORD. The threads
from that gave me quite a bit of information about the family.

Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. I already have a copy of the birth certificate for George HALFORD, born 1843 in Newent.

The certificate is for George HALFORD, born 19 Feb 1843, in Newent Workhouse.
The father is not named, but the mother's name is Hannah HALFORD.
The father's occupation is hired servant.
The informant is S. STONE, Master of the Workhouse, who registered the birth on 18 Mar 1843.

The date looked hopeful but the details do not seem to fit the family of the George HALFORD I am
seeking.

I cannot find any trace of his birth if he was registered as George Jenkins either.

Thank you.

Hi Slowhands,

Thank you for your reply. Probably George's birth was not registered. He and Charles were both baptised as
HALFORD on 9th Feb 1845. It does seem strange that the family have the surname JENKINS in the 1841 census
but change to HALFORD later.

The family are scattered by 1861 probably because their mother Harriet HALFORD died in June 1858.

Thanks
