I seem to be running circles with this family

I've started tracing the maternal branches as I've hit a brickwall with my male line.

My great grandfather was John Ireland he married Elizabeth Metcalf(e)
12th Sept 1876
father listed as Isaac Metcalf a tinman on marriage cert, witness Mary Metcalf

I have her here on the 1871 census as Betsey

I can't seem to find them prior to 1871, I don't know if its me , too much overload with families or if they are just eluding me
