Umbrella makers in Forest of Dean (General)

by N.Hunt, (5544 days ago)

My 3x great grandfather Peter Hunt (born about 1809 in Cork, Ireland) was an umbrella maker and in 1861 lived at the High St, EastDean. I notice from some postings that other people have relatives who were umbrella makers. Was the Forest of Dean well known for this line of work? Was there a particular company or firm of note in the area? Any information would be appreciated as I can find very little about Peter and his wife Jane. Many thanks, Nigel

Thank you for the reply and the help with Peter's wife's maiden name. I was hoping to also find any information as to the umbrella makers in the Forest of Dean. Nigel

There was an "Umbrella Hospital" in Newerne Street, Lydney. It's location can be found at

The banner can be seen on the right hand side of the picture at an angle to the building.
