I am lookingb for the exact date of birth for William Morgan brn 1853 Forest of Dean son of Henry Morgan 13/9/1826 and Mary Ann Alford 22/2/1829. Henry Morgan was the son of another Henry born about 1803-1811, it would be nice to trace his mother and father also.

There are a number of BMD entries for Monmouth dist in 1852/54 for William MORGAN's
I'm getting the feeling of a Non-Conformist family - its possible the birth is not in BMD.

My mother used to say there was a Henry Morgan in her family and there was definitely a Thomas Morgan who went to Culham College, Oxford too. My Rook family were from Lane End and I am wondering if your Morgans link with the ones I am looking for. If your Henry Morgan links with my Rooks I would be interested because I've never found any conclusive material to show how the Morgans were related to the Rooks. My mother said they were some sort of cousins and knew a lot about them. I know Slowhands did some work on it but I wasn't sure we definitely had the correct Thomas Morgan or Henry Morgan. Thomas Morgan definitely went to Culham College, Oxford but I cannot find where he worked or lived after that.

My mother always said that there were people called Morgan in the family, one of whom she said had an M.A. from Oxford. She said it was Henry. She also used to speak of Fanny Morgan. Slowhands once found some info. on the latter but I could find no links with my own family apart from them living close by. However, I have found a scrap of paper in the last three and a half years with Thomas Morgan's name written on it, in copperplate handwriting with the date Sept. 8th [or 6th?]1854 and Culham College, Oxon. after it (there is some geometry on the back of it in the same handwriting). Culham College was a teacher training college then and seems to be an institute for religious studies now.
Looks like your Morgan was possibly one of the first students.
Culham college, built in 1852/3, at a cost of nearly £20,000, was a training school for schoolmasters of the dioceses of Oxford and Gloucester, and contained accommodation for 130 students
You may find more info in its records.

Held at the Bodleian and Oxfordshire Archives
Because of changing "boundaries" this is a corner of Oxfordshire / Berkshire despite being only 6 or so miles from Oxford ! In 1861 both Culham and Abingdon are recorded in Berkshire.
The College Vice Principal at the time is William Pickard of Yarmouth, and the "student" School masters are aged 19 - 21. Perhaps your Thomas Morgan was born around 1830/35 (?)

I contacted Culham College's archives earlier this year. They said that I can go and look at them and that there are relevant records there. However, I have to go to Oxford to look at them and book in advance. I didn't realise though that he must have been one of its first students.
I found one or two schoolmasters in later records who seemed to fit the bill but nothing conclusive. The problem is that Morgan is such a common name it's hard to find the right people.

I know our Morgans lived at Lane end but William born ?1853 Newlands moved to Pontyprith some time after 1881, where in 1888 he married a Caroline Whittington.
